Des Moines Chief John R. Hattery ordered patrolmen to deliver any found pheasants to hospitals. The directive resolves a prior mystery and a legal question raised after a Fort Dodge patrolman faced a similar dilemma last week.
Kalona school board advertised for bids on a schoolhouse addition with December 10 set for bid opening. First round produced eight bids about 4500 over the 35000 estimate. The project is federally aided with 45 percent federal funds. The board recently sold 20000 in bonds to Carlton D Beh Co of Des Moines. bonds await award of contract.
Centerville relief officials report a rare medical case called a collar bone stomach. Lewis Crowder, 57, of six miles south of Centerville, suffers a misplaced stomach that has crowded against a collapsed lung within two inches of his left collar bone. Doctors noted breathing trouble last week before authorities learned of the condition.
Municipal Judge J. E. Mershon dismissed the gambling charge against Gov. Clyde L. Herring for betting a hog on the Iowa Minnesota football game on November 4. He ruled the evidence showed any crime would have been in Johnson county and suggested the case would not advance if tried in Iowa City.
Mrs. L A Thompson mourns as her pet raccoon Billy Boy dies on the operating table after eight veterinarians refused to operate. The creature had two ulcerated teeth and failed to regain consciousness following anesthesia.
The state board of control will direct a series of moving pictures showing a prisoner’s reception and progression through prison routine from intake to release. Scenes include cells dining room yard and convicts working in shops.
A fire of undetermined origin swept through half a city block in Delta downtown causing about 15000 dollars in damage. The C A Burt drug store building and stock the Jacobs meat market with all stock and equipment the Felis Bowen barber shop and Walter Ellis barber shop were all destroyed.
Mrs. Oscar Sloan twenty two of Eldon died in Ottumwa hospital from burns after a kerosene lamp ignited her clothing at home. Neighbors said she fainted while carrying the lit lamp and Walter McCoy rushed to help, beating out the flames.
A Washington union Thanksgiving service is set for Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian church with Rev. Vernon H. Carter delivering the sermon on The Grace of Gratitude. Other ministers participate and the offering supports the Washington A M F church.
Poultry entries flood the city hall for the county signant show as chickens ducks and novelty birds fill the room. Officials expect a record exhibit and clear the extra space for a larger display than last year with the show opening tomorrow to the public.
Iowa will require chauffeurs to pass driving tests before 1936 licenses. Lew Wallace, head of the motor vehicle department, said tests begin immediately with a $2 fee and actual driving tests in the vehicle used by the chauffeur. Licenses run through June 30, 1937, and many new checks boosted revenue to $26,000 with 32,000 licenses issued in the year.
Mrs. Don Hazen, 211 West Washington street, is recuperating at home after being struck by Richard Wehr's car while crossing a street near the square about 11 30 p m. She sustained bruises to shoulder and knee and was not seriously hurt. Wehr and Hazen took her to Washington county hospital for examination before returning her home.
The state rests after presenting testimony in the Hesseltine case in Brighton. Judge Patterson overruled a defense motion to dismiss. Court adjourned to 1:30 pm with defense to begin its case, aiming for a quick jury presentation.
Washington township Farm Bureau will hold a meeting and officer election at 8 PM Friday at the home of county Agent and Mrs W J Roudabush 22 East Washington Street. A program with moving pictures is planned. Everyone is urged to attend.
Mrs B F Schwartz who subbed Sunday as director of the Methodist choir has been elected to be the regular director succeeding Miss Alice Hunter. Schwartz graduated from Grinnell College and taught in the conservatory there after graduation.
The Iowa Tuberculosis Association announces fifty five million seals will be sold in post offices and stores as part of the annual drive. Funds totaling about eighty five thousand dollars are needed in Iowa for prevention and education, with last year’s haul near seventy six thousand. The campaign, supported by Dr Walter Bierring and Governor Clyde Herring, also offers autographed Roosevelt seats for sale to raise funds.
The campaign to raise the YMCA sustaining fund toward a $4,500 goal for next year advances. The current total is $41,050 with promising prospects for reaching the target. Significant contributions were received yesterday from country friends of the Y.
Christmas decorations brighten the square as a Santa Claus image descends a chimney on the Central Park bandstand. The chimney was erected yesterday and rumors say a fireplace may be built within the bandstand. Colored lights and greenery are displayed and spotlights illuminate the scene.

Seventeen ministers attended the county ministerial association meeting at the Y M C A. Rev J T Perkins spoke on missions in India and Lewis Warren described European youth engagement with religious questions. Rev D E Zimmerman was elected secretary and treasurer, succeeding Rev C E Strong. The group approved funding a nativity poster for Simpson billboard spots. Rev A W Fillmore presided.
The New Deal art unit is painting Boulder dam powerhouse walls and floors with Indian themed imagery. Allen Tupper True directs colors and design aiming for a vivid, harmonious scheme featuring blue flywheels yellow generators turquoise pumps vermillion engines and orange driveshafts. The project includes lightning scenes with cogwheels wings and eyes and owlish thunderbirds.
R. L. Handah is promoted from the mechanical department to sales at the McCormick Deering store. He has worked for International people for two years and arrived last August from Fairfield.

Food and drug outlets may open limited hours. banks, post office, courthouse, and library to close. Post office to suspend mail deliveries. stamps sales only 8 to 10 a.m. Y M C A lobby open after 3 p.m.. regular gym and swimming classes canceled.
Sioux City report says Frank Brise boi of Fonda Iowa testified that no protection system was discussed. Iowa Governor Clyde L. Herring announced the suspension of State Agent C W McNaughton of the Bureau of Investigation after testimony linking him to protection payments for slot machines in Plymouth County.
Dan Slabaugh of Kalona was taken to Washington county hospital yesterday evening after a sausage grinder belt slipped. A board was loosened and struck him on the head causing a concussion rather than a fractured skull. he is expected to remain in the hospital briefly for observation.
E. R. Harvey of 609 East Washington street died shortly after two o'clock this afternoon at his home. The body was taken to Sherman’s Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mr. Harvey had been in poor health for some time.
