Thanksgiving closings across Washington observed by many

Most stores and offices in Washington will close on Thursday for Thanksgiving, with some remaining open. The post office and federal offices will close except for holiday service. The Evening Journal prints at noon. Friday hours shift for retail and county offices extend the holiday into the weekend amid slick roads and light snow.

Camper Explosion Injures Two Cedar Rapids Men

A propane tank leak sparked an explosion and fire that destroyed a camper 40 miles south of Kalona on Highway 1 at 8 30 p m Monday. Howard E Anderson and Monty Stuefen were treated at University Hospital for burns and injuries and released. Damages were about 3000 dollars and traffic on the road was briefly halted. Kalona firefighters assisted with the blaze.

Justice William C. Douglas Hospitalized For Acupuncture

William C. Douglas, retired Supreme Court justice, is receiving acupuncture treatment for pain at a Portland hospital after his retirement due to health issues from a stroke. His wife Cathy Douglas said he should return to the District of Columbia in a few days.

Five Washington protests filed against property value hikes

Washington County expects five protests to the state ordered increases in property values. Assessor Ernest Lund notes seven protests were filed, two invalid, leaving five valid for review by December 1. The board may recommend changes, but the Revenue Department holds final authority.

Bordwell Files Four Informations in District Court

County Attorney Richard S. Bordwell filed four criminal informations in District Court on Monday. Three target Edward Don of 602 N Iowa Ave Washington, a juvenile to be tried as an adult on breaking and entering and two counts of operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent tied to the Sept 28 gas station break-in. The other information charges Raymond Hoskins of Richland with false making and uttering a bank check for 1236 dollars presented to a Washington auto dealer.

Snowmobile Registration Deadline Set for End of Year

Iowa snowmobiles require licensing by December 31 with renewals for the current period. Transfers require valid registrations and proof of Iowa sales tax payment for new registrations. The fee is 6.50 per year and 9.50 for the remainder of 1975 and 1976, per Washington County Recorder Maxine Smith.

Firefighters mounted a massive aerial offensive against a five year record brush fire near Los Angeles. The Tujunga Canyon blaze burned 43,000 acres, destroyed 19 homes, and forced 3,000 to flee as winds up to 60 mph fed the inferno.
