In Hazleton Pennsylvania 1200 feet underground five miners were rescued after nine days trapped when Black Creek breached the Tomhicken colliery. One miner Charles Smith is presumed drowned. others were weakened but expected to recover. Rescue crews used steam and electric pumps to drain water and remove debris.
