Dr George Maresh Former Riverside Doctor Dies in Denver
Dr George Maresh born Iowa City October 26 1880 trained at Iowa State University of Iowa medicine 1902 practiced Riverside 1902 to 1917 then served in World War I. After the war he lived in Iowa City and remained active in civic groups until retirement in 1957. He died Thursday in Denver. Survived by brother William of Iowa City and a daughter and two sons, all physicians in Denver.

Carrier boys and parents were guests at a Washington YMCA dinner where outstanding carriers were honored for their service. John McDaniel was named the year’s outstanding carrier boy and received the emblematic award marking the 48th year of the top honor. Cash prizes went to Kim Boyer 20 dollars, Jim Mallory 10 dollars, and Jim Moyer 5 dollars, with all carriers receiving silver dollars. Kim Boyer presented a personal gift to M. E. Year’s Toll Falls. Seven Die on Iowa Highways Weekend
Seven persons were killed on Iowa highways over the weekend, pushing the year’s traffic death toll to 27, 78 short of the 1987 total at this time. Victims include Verdean Sleper, 23, of Rake, who died when his car struck a bridge abutment on Highway 322 near Buffalo Center, with the body found after he went off a creek 12 hours later. Royal Fulton Jr., 25, of Neo, perished when his tractor overturned on a county road. Larry Nichols, 22, of Winterset, died in a two‑car crash on U.S. 69 south of Winterset. passenger injuries occurred to Nichols’ occupants while James Van Rossum, 56, of rural Lorimer, was uninjured. Davitra Straudovskis, 16, of Andrew, was killed when her car left Way 62 near Andrew. her father Pall Straudovskis had arrived in the United States as a displaced person in 1955. Two Illinois men, Arnold Smoot, 12, Roseville, and William Moore, 44, Moline, died in separate crashes near Eldora and Tipton respectively. The first weekend fatality was Delmar Gene Brediow, 20, rural Rockwell, who died at a crossing five miles southwest of Mason City.

First Woman in Iowa Legislature Dies in Mount Pleasant
Mrs. Carolyn Pendray, 46, the first woman to serve in both Iowa House and Senate, died Sunday after a stroke. Elected to the House in 1928 from Jackson County, she was re elected in 1930 and 1982 and later won a Senate seat. She championed women's rights legislation.
