F C Hills, a well known western Iowa figure and former Sioux City station agent, died from poison taken in breakfast food. His wife lay dangerously ill, and Hills, age fifty seven, had served as general manager of the Pacific Short Line and as a receiver. He was active in G A R affairs and local government.
A large convention in Rockford with leaders from Sterling Dixon Oregon Byron Rockton and other Rock River valley towns formed the Rock River Improvement association to push a feasibility study of converting Rock River from Rockford to Sterling into a backwater canal. The group plans to petition Congress for a formal investigation and will appoint a committee to travel to Washington.
Reports from Ann Arbor indicate no direct overtures have been made to Michigan or Wisconsin to settle the athletic controversy with Chicago. Professor Pattengill warns the dispute could persist through the next year unless a settlement is reached after Thanksgiving.
Dr. James B. Garner of Bradley Polytechnic Institute reports arsenic as the cause of Mrs. Fowler’s death on April 15 in Vermont. Six students confirmed the finding. State’s Attorney Chipperfield to receive the report. Mrs. Fowler resided in Rushville and left a child heir to $4,000. custody efforts were underway when she died during a visit to see the father.

In Menasha justice court Owen Larsen, a fallownkeepr, was fined 50 dollars and costs after Nels Anderson accused him of giving liquor to his son Axel, who worked for Larsen. An appeal was filed. In Boston a Turcoman crew rescue reports seven shipwrecked sailors from the brigantine Cledda Bello 300 miles off the Irish coast on Nov 15.

Buffalo NY reports dull hog and sheep trade. St Louis and Detroit grain quotes note Chicago style futures and cash ranges for wheat corn oats rye and related grains.

Joliet, November 24. The golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs William SS FU was celebrated Wednesday. Guests included several who attended their wedding in 1849. Mr Hill, born in New Jersey in 1828, came to Joliet in 1844 and has remained. Mrs Tull’s maiden name was Elizabeth Munsey, who came to Joliet from Delaware with her parents.
In Chattanooga on November 24, about 4,000 people attended the dedication and turnover of part of the 107 monuments and markers marking Illinois troops positions on Chickamauga and Chattanooga fields. Major Connolly, Governor Tanner, General Boynton, and Senator Cullom spoke at Orchard Knob where a key monument stands. Illinois markers are Quincy granite with polished shields and regiment names.
In Indianapolis on Nov 24 Judge Baker told the jury the case extends beyond the parties and concerns damages for loss of life due to sheriff negligence. The verdict rests on a preponderance of evidence. failure to exercise ordinary care suffices for liability. Consider all relevant facts including local conduct and mobs. if sheriff is found negligent, bondsmen are implicated.
Charles E. Glover age 21 and Mabel Matthews age 18 married in Chicago after eloping there Tuesday and then came to Racine Wisconsin to settle. They plan to make their home in Racine.
General Methuen reports a dawn assault at Belmont where three ridges were carried and forty Boers captured. Brigadier Fetherstonhaugh wounded, several officers killed or wounded. Armies moved with naval brigade support as heavy casualties listed among British regiments.
