Hot Springs Virginia reports on Representative Burton and Judge Crumpacker meeting President-elect Taft. They discuss a thorough tariff revision, potential schedule changes, and party pledges. New York reports Andrew Carnegie will publish a December Century Magazine article arguing that infant industries no longer need tariff protection. Washington reports a sharp attack on the so called paper trust during Saturdays tariff hearing before the house ways and means committee. Harry F. Pierce of Council Bluffs is adjudged bankrupt with liabilities listed at 575 447 dollars. George W. Holdrege of Omaha is the heaviest creditor at 400 000 dollars tied to a trade of unumbered Nebraska ranch property for Perseverance Mining and Milling stock in Idaho. About fifty other creditors are named, William Barker among the largest at 60 000 dollars.
Five men including Captain Obed Knowlton of the Hugh G. were drowned after a collision in Broad Sound near Boston. The schooner sank quickly while three crew members were saved. A separate Springfield report notes a fire on Fifth Street causing 15000 dollars in damage.
A Red Lodge dispatch reports nine miners died in a coal mine fire at the North Western Improvement Co. initial counts had over sixty entombed. three bodies recovered, others believed buried beneath earth and ashes. All but one victim were Finnish.
John B. Dunham, in charge of the oil departments at the Chicago and Alton shops, was instantly killed by a train in the yards at Bloomington on November 23.
