Reports from Butte and Red Lodge detail a coal mine explosion and fire with many entombed or dead. Rescue crews evacuated dozens and battled fire as officials warned of slim chances for those trapped while others survived after air and water lines were deployed.
A massive gas explosion ripped through a large section of Gold Street Brooklyn killing twenty five people and injuring many more authorities say. The blast created a deep hole and devastated nearby structures as rescue teams comb the area for survivors.
A gas main leak sparked a blast in a fifty foot deep Gold Street trench between York and Front, lifting the street and burying fifteen workers and at least ten missing. Rescue digs through fifty feet of dirt and pipes to recover bodies as flames, water geysers, and debris blot the scene. Samuel Trout, foreman, was killed. several workers saved by escaping through a sewer mouth three blocks away. The blast injured nearby residents and schoolchildren witnessed the disaster.
Dispatches report continued, spreading fires in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Fifteen miles of fire sweep the Klamash mountains in eastern Oklahoma threatening the Arkansas national forest reserves and large areas of property damaged already.
Denver officials report the American Smelting and Refining Company will join local commercial groups to oppose any reduction in the import duty on lead. The move aims to prevent mine closures in Colorado by preserving current price levels and mining activity.
St. Petersburg officials report negotiations to sell the Russian rights in the Wright airplane to the Russian government for military use. The talks are led by M. Vincent, agent for Hart O. Berg, European business manager for the Wright brothers.

In Madison Wisconsin today the Wisconsin Badgers meet the Chicago Maroons in the season’s key Western football clash. A 1599 Breeches Bible said to be the book Washington used as a Master Mason was restored to Lodge of Antiquity No. 1 in Montreal. The lodge, Canada’s oldest Masonic body, traces its charter to Ireland and its officers of the Forty-sixth British regiment who initiated Washington’s party in New York. The Bible has long resided in a vault under various Masonic bodies.
Charles M Roe, longtime business manager of the American Baptist Publication Society, resigns to join Dr J H Kellogg of Battle Creek Michigan. The change takes effect January 1 after more than two decades with the Society in Chicago and Philadelphia.
Clarence A. Penman, senior medic at the University of Michigan, was expelled after kissing a nurse at the university hospital. The nurse was stripped of her cap as disgrace and later discharged from the institution.
