Practically all Washington business places will close Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday with usual hours for some. The post office will be closed with no mail delivery or intake for the day. The lobby opens 2 to 4 p.m. and mail goes out at 4:15 p.m. The Evening Journal appears at noon. Local, state and federal offices close.
Walter E Paustian 74 of Bettendorf former chairman of Donahue Savings Bank was sentenced by U S District Judge William C Stuart to 18 months in prison for embezzling 918 747 15 over 10 to 15 years He is to begin Dec 27 at a federal facility and faces three years probation plus restitution of 53221 20.
In Fairfield Iowa two Birmingham men Tim Simmons and Chuck Egli suffered minor burns when hot metal contacted moisture in a slag bucket during a waste pour. The resulting vapor explosion shattered thirty windows and caused only minor structural damage to the Fairfield Aluminum Castings Co.
The Ministerial Association of Washington invites the community to a Thursday morning Thanksgiving service at First Baptist Church 122 E Second starting at 10 am. Speakers include Rev. Chuck Smith United Methodist Church Don Eaton First Christian Church and Mrs. Phyllis Litwiller Washington Mennonite Church. Music features Natalie Berkey solo Jeff Schoonover and Allen Kron duet. The annual Thanksgiving service will be held in the south building Wednesday November 23 at 7 30 p m. Solo music and performances by the junior and adult choirs will highlight the evening with the offering supporting hunger programs of both churches in the yoke.

Charles Lankford received a three year federal prison sentence in Des Moines after a conviction for attempting to burglarize a night depository at the National Bank of Washington on August 19. Accomplice Steven Griffin failed to appear for sentencing, triggering a bench warrant. he and Lankford were apprehended outside bank offices, with the depository damaged but no money taken.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office preliminarily lists about 207 American convicts eligible for transfer to U.S. jails in December under a U.S.–Mexico repatriation treaty. Ambassador Lucey noted paperwork caused the discrepancy with the earlier 240 estimate and said transfers require consent of convicts and both governments. US Embassy spokesman Roberts warned that the list may be premature until all files are complete.

Wilfred Nielsen 39 of Blair faces two first degree murder charges in the rifle slayings of Edward Grabbe 60 and Opal Lucille Grabbe 52 found near their farm in Washington County Nebraska. Nielsen waived reading of charges and bond. a first degree murder charge is nonbondable. A rifle was used in the deaths, investigators report the victims each had one bullet wound. Nielsen, a farm landlord and commercial hunter, was arrested at his Blair home without resistance.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies with a slight chance of light snow tonight. Partly cloudy conditions expected Wednesday with a high in the upper 30s and a low near the mid to upper 20s. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph tonight. Snow chance remains around 20 percent tonight.

He said details were gossip and BCI agents suggested facts. Fagen’s father said the youth would confess under pressure. mother said she could persuade him yet he denied the killing.
