A Fort Dodge column reports a highway patrolman stopped a car north of town with a single head light. While talking to the driver eight following hunter cars halted, thinking they would be checked by game wardens. The officer then signalled the others to move on, later finding 80 pheasants tossed from the vehicles into a ditch.
The Perry school board rejects Walter G. Clark's tender of performance after he was discharged as superintendent in May 1934. His dismissal, attacked by Miss Frances Giltner who accused him of improper advances, was found invalid last week by state supervisor Agnes Samuelson. May Hills of Dallas county had upheld the board's action.
Waterloo H T Parsons a 230 pound Cedar Rapids salesman lost a $75 wager he could bike to Cedar Falls and back with only a 15 minute rest at the Lawn City. He rode 11 of 16 miles in a baby blizzard on ice coated roads. Winners of $25 each were C T Call R H Harger and Ivan Harger all of Cedar Rapids. The test grew from a hotel lobby chat.
Ottumwa contractor Frank Hamilton halted his car on a highway after signaling from a man with a red flag and flashlight. A gun was pressed to his side as he was ordered to exit, and his billfold containing about $147 was taken. Hours later Fred Lawson of Des Moines reported three men with a red flag and flashlight tried to stop him nearby but he did not stop.
C. C. Wright of West Union fractured a thumb and suffered minor leg injuries after a crutch broke while he walked. He had part of a leg amputated at a Rochester hospital and was sent back for examination before returning home the same day.
Twelve year old Harold Roberts of Clear Lake swallowed a wooden whistle part and it lodged in his esophagus. He was taken to a hospital in Mason City where the whistle was removed and he was reported resting well this morning.
Grinnell College student paper The Scarlet and Black runs a front page editorial criticizing the football coaching staff. It questions why Pioneer victories are infrequent and labels blocking and tackling as poorly executed over the last two years. The piece urges a personnel shake up if the athletic setup cannot produce a respectable showing.
A southern Iowa hunter was found in Hamilton county near Blakesburg inside closed territory. He claimed he did not know the area was restricted and admitted carrying five pheasants when three are allowed. Officers seized the birds and released him.
State law recognizing undertakers as professional men rather than merchants was enacted by the last legislature. A district meeting of funeral directors in Ottumwa drew 250 delegates, the largest attendance in the group’s history.
Sioux City November reports describe the testimony of Bert Bollinger's wife about a man claiming to be Park A Findley visiting the Bollinger home in 1933. The case links alleged state wide gambling with officials, including Attorney General Ed L O Connor. Other key witnesses struggle to testify as Max Duckworth and Jake Harkaway seek court rulings.
Next Sabbath marks the annual family roll call at the United Presbyterian church. Congregation divided into districts with messengers assigned to reach every family. Clerk of the session Lloyd Walker will call the roll by families as they stand.
Ames Iowa November 22 The Iowa State College economists report 1936 hog and beef cattle will pay big dividends though prices will ease from 1935 levels. Hog prices rise seasonally into spring then slip. cattle will fluctuate with a heavy late spring market and higher cheap grades. Domestic demand grows while foreign markets lag, butter eggs and grain production rise, hay up, pasture near normal, and cattle sheep output projected to increase as price signals shift production away from corn toward grain crops.
A barn with contents burned early today on the L F Duwa farm eight miles north of Washington. Loss estimated $2,000 to $2,500. Hay, straw, and some machinery destroyed. No livestock lost. Fire crews from Washington and Kalona, aided by Farmers Mutual truck, prevented spread to a house and nearby barn.
Mrs. H. G. Miller has returned home after a three week visit at Sterling Illinois and Downers Grove Illinois with her sister Mrs. Frank W. Harner.
After a nearly seven hour trial Judge Waterson presided as Snyder & Hayes faced John Gammon. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant on the counterclaim awarding 10.58 with foreman Ross D. Plumly signing. The case involved payment for 19 hogs sold Sept 24, 1932 at a Washington community sale totaling 95.48. The jury answered three interrogatories affirmatively regarding disease, warranty, and fitness for feeder use. Nine pigs died soon after delivery and the defendant claimed damages for care and losses. Next case set for Monday involves Dennis Hesseltine of Brighton charged with rape.
Public invited to a Washington high school concert Tuesday night featuring the band numbers Nash Mareh and the overture to Poet and Peasant directed by Alvin Edgar of the Iowa State college band He will join a rehearsal and discuss band issues in the afternoon and speak at 5 30 during a dinner for band members Tickets are 25 cents for students and 35 cents for the public with activity tickets accepted.
The administration faced a flood of constitutional challenges to New Deal laws as threats of civil suits emerged to compel compliance with the Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935.

Chairman Carl W. Klein announced the Christmas seal sale will start on Thanksgiving Day with seals mailed to residents asking for support. The drive is run by the Washington County Tuberculosis Association with Dr. C. A. Boice as chairman and Mrs. George Rudiger leading local efforts. The county quota is 850, with half of proceeds staying for county public health and the rest funding broader tuberculosis campaign work.
The junior college Little Theater presents The Late Christopher Bean in Washington with strong performances by John Applegate Evelyn Turner George Masson Virginia Shannon and others. Tonight’s show repeats in the Washington high school auditorium to lure a bigger crowd.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce plans a pre Christmas pageant parade with Santa Claus on December 4. The Three Little Pigs will join the spectacle, with scenes from the popular tale enacted for children and adults alike.
Two lava streams from Kilauea’s Mo ku aweoweo, the world’s second largest active volcano, race toward Hilo and Kona on Hawaii Island. At 2 30 a m island time the northeast stream hovered 25 miles from Hilo, having moved 15 miles in under 24 hours. The coast guard ordered standby for potential evacuations as lava widens to five miles before splitting into two tongues.
Washington Masons held their annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Mahonic temple with 110 attendees from local lodges and visitors from Ainsworth Kalona Ollie. Professor H J Thornton of the State University of Town spoke on Thanksgiving for Mom and Masons, tracing customs from 1621 to present and urging a national day. Fred Rey, master of the Washington lodge, presided and introduced the speaker.
