In Doncaster England 24 miners died after an explosion and fire at Bentley Colliery. About 1 000 escaped and more than 30 were injured while 12 miners remained trapped as families gathered at the mine mouth. The colliery serves 4 000 workers producing 25 000 tons weekly.
In Salem vigilantes and peace officers surrounded Grant's Pass area seeking two heavily armed suspects believed to have fatally shot Special Patrolman Victor Knott. A school janitor tipped the tip leading to the pursuit as the posse searched woodland trails.
New York reports extra guards police and detectives to deter threats of bombings in the financial district. Strangers face questioning and bag checks in restricted zones around key offices including J P Morgan and Co. and other financial firms linked to fascist government interests.
Iowa City on November 21 65 year old William F Bureer an insurance salesman was killed when struck by an automobile driven by Ray Bywater a University of Iowa junior in the incident last night.
Richard F. Mitchell of Fort Dodge, Iowa Democratic chairman, predicts Democrats win both the Iowa senate and governor races in 1932. He endorses his re nomination as national committeeman, outlines district meetings in Sioux City Burling ton and Council Bluffs, and signals Roosevelt as favored presidential nominee. He says Brookhart Turner votes and Hoover’s policies hurt farmers, and Democrats may gain the next legislature.
Des Moines will deploy eight state agents until crime is reduced and order restored, announced Attorney General John Fletcher after the Allie Kiddie kidnapping. Fletcher pledges to remove gang influence from Des Moines and will meet Monday with police heads, the Polk County attorney, and the sheriff.
Mrs. Mary Violet Durst died Friday night at her daughter's home northwest of Washington. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. L H Anderson of Prairie Flower Baptist Church presiding. Burial is at Elm Grove cemetery. Visitation is tonight and until noon Sunday at Mrs. R B Downs at 702 East Jefferson Street. Durst, born September 4, 1860, near Richmond, was widow of Joseph Durst who died in 1912. She leaves two daughters, two grandchildren, a brother James Arnold, and was a Christian church member.
Delegates at the Farmers Protective Association of Iowa meet in Des Moines to back impeachment moves against Gov Dan Turner if he refuses to recognize citizen petitions. They condemn officials for using police and military for the tuberculin test and seek removal of the state secretary of agriculture and lawmakers involved. J W Lenker re-elected president. The Better Washington club announced plans to decorate the business streets of Washington for the holiday season. About 300 dollars has been subscribed by local business houses for lighting one large tree in Central Park and smaller trees before stores. Trees will be ordered Monday and in place early December with lights, plus Santa Claus visits and candy for children.
Miss Jeannette Kyle offered a fine review of Humanity Up rooted by Hindus as the final book week program at the library at one this afternoon. The work discusses the Russia of the U S S R with a Russian author.
Washington high school 24 players fought through a mud slicked Case field to beat Keokuk 12 to 6. Jones led Washington with multiple carries and two touchdowns while Kupka added the other score and strong line play limited Keokuk to 19 rushing yards.

John D. McCaleb aged 80 died yesterday afternoon in the county home hospital ward after four weeks of serious illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. E. J. Shook of the Ainsworth Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Ainsworth cemetery. He was born in Pennsylvania March 28, 1851, son of Jacob and Kiziah McCaleb, lived in Dublin area before settling in Ainsworth, and was a member of the local Methodist church. Surviving are his brother George McCaleb and sister Mrs. Anna Simpson, both of Ainsworth, from a nine-child family.
Ambassador Debuchi told Secretary Stimson that Japan favors an international committee to probe Manchuria and China, with Japanese forces in the Tsitsihar area to be withdrawn as soon as possible. He cited a dispatch from Chenchatang showing some troops already returning and stressed the aim was to defeat General Ma rather than occupy Tsitsihar or disrupt the Chinese eastern railroad.
