Tragic bicycle crash kills two Riverside girls
A car struck three Riverside seventh graders on a paved county road near Riverside. Linda Sue Simon, 12, and Mary Jane Gerot, 11, were killed, Jennie Latta, 11, survived uninjured. Driver Loren Patrick Walsh, 27, charged with two counts of manslaughter and OMVI. The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. as the girls rode north toward Riverside. Witnesses Masson and Woods reported the collision. Walsh was held on $7,500 bond. Conviction on manslaughter carries up to eight years in prison and a $1,000 fine. Linda Sue Simon’s funeral is planned for Tuesday.

Mississippi home bombed in third attack on capital residents
A two story frame house in Jackson, targeted Saturday night, was blown apart by dynamite. R. B. Kochtitzky, a Methodist lay leader and director of the Central for Renewal, his wife and baby, and a guest were upstairs but unharmed. Kochtitzky had worked with Negroes in religious programs and his home hosted many visitors. The incident follows two prior bombings in two months, signaling that Ku Klux Klan type groups may be shifting attacks toward moderate whites from civil rights radicals.

Monoxide Tragedy Strikes Honeymooners at Akron Inn
At the Yankee Clipper Inn in Akron Ohio a defective pool heater released odorless carbon monoxide flooding 100 rooms. Bruce and Joan Plagman were killed on their wedding night while 57 others were taken to hospitals. four remained ill along with two deputy sheriffs. Mary and Betty Bishop of Elyria died during a holiday visit. Police evacuated 200 guests as investigators blamed the heater and ventilating system. Guests returned or checked out as police and motel staff continued to manage the scene.

14 year old held after Iowa family shooting
In Ogden Iowa a 14 year old youth was arrested after his father was shot and killed on a family farm and the mother was wounded. Boone County authorities did not release names. Betty Ray 34 was treated at Iowa Methodist Hospital Des Moines for a shotgun chest wound in serious condition.

Washington County man injured in corn picker accident
William H. Rader of Route 1 Washington sustained severe injuries when his left hand and leg were drawn into a self propelled corn picker while clearing a jam on Mildred Kupka’s farm six miles south of Washington. He was rushed by ambulance to University Hospitals Iowa City where his left hand was amputated and his left leg suffered crushing fractures. Rader remains in serious condition as doctors work to save the leg and prevent infection.
