Kalona Winds Flatten Garages Hit Local Homes

High winds yesterday afternoon toppled garages at Phillip Marner and El Yoder residences in Kalona's southwest. The storm also blew out windows and uprooted several trees in the affected area.

Mrs. Rose Walsh 73 Dies After Heart Attack

Mrs. Rose Walsh, 73, of three miles north of West Chester, died Monday at Mercy Hospital Town City after a heart attack. Funeral arrangements by Powell Funeral Home are pending. Born September 24, 1885 near Sigourney, she married T. F. Walsh in 1915. Survived by children Paul Cedar Rapids Harold West Chester Hugh Bay City Veronica Solon 13 grandchildren and three brothers. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Wellman and the Altar Rosary Society.

Seek Signatures For School Reorganization Proposal

Forty persons from all districts attended a Monday meeting at the high school to receive petitions seeking signatures to place a school reorganization plan on a special election. Steering committee members urged inquiries and aim to collect the required signatures by November 26.

Prisoner Seizes Homestead Police Station In 90 Minute Shootout

In Homestead Florida a jailed man named Shaffer wrestled with jail staff and held the police station for 90 minutes. He wounded hostage Ted Beam a officer and father of two. Chief Dewitt was injured. Tear gas forced Shaffer to the floor where he was killed by return fire.

Manslaughter Charge Filed After Crash in Fort Dodge

Fort Dodge Iowa Daniel Jones 17 was charged with manslaughter in the death of Bruce Ludwig 15 whose body was found in a ditch north of the city after a late Saturday night crash. Jones hospitalized with injuries and unable to recall the incident. Another youth David Craft 17 said he did not know Ludwig.

Washington County chairman for the March of Times campaign and Mr and Mrs F Verle Mitchell attended a Minneapolis district meeting of polio groups. They reported the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will expand research and patient care to other childhood diseases and announce scholarship aid for science students. Tornadoes and heavy rains sweep through Iowa towns

Tornadoes hit Elkader in Clayton County and a Grinnell area swath, with 12 to 15 business district buildings damaged in Elkader. A vast weather storm lashed the West and Midlands with tornadoes heavy snow and rain reaching from the Canadian border to Mexico. At least six dead and 18 missing including three boy scouts and airmen. Dozens stranded in lodges and along snowbound highways. Elkader Iowa hit by a damaging tornado on Monday. Rescue efforts continued for missing scouts and airmen in mountains near Tucson and Hayden Peak.

Corn producers in Washington County will vote on November 25 to choose between two corn programs for 1959 and beyond.
