Shenandoah suffers a heart attack while serving papers in a civil suit. Constable Punk, Constable W C, aids, 67, collapses. Chief C. C. Novinger and an ambulance arrival follow. Mr. Aid is noted as a prominent figure in the LOO and a judge.
Bids on equipment for a new hia were announced by the Fairfield school board subject to WPA approval. Contracts include Chicago Apparatus Co. for scientific gear, Royal Typewriter Co. for typewriters, testament to Jteston and Anderson Co. for heavy manual training machinery, Brown Lynch Scott Co. for manual training hand tools, Fairfield store for hand tovns, and Bradshaw Furniture Co. for a refriger ator.
Testimony wrapped up on Ben Brodkey's suit seeking to strike downtown meters as unconstitutional. Merchants said the nickel hitching posts harmed trade while police argued the meter system improved traffic conditions and lawyers were given 10 days to file briefs.
Iowa City report says Mavis Sloan about 19 of Cedar Rapids was found lying along a highway north of town. She had been thrown from a car after the man she was riding with attempted an assault. She returned to Cedar Rapids and identified no name of her assailant.
Ames resolutions adopted by the Iowa State Horticulture Society seek expanded extension service efforts at Iowa State College to promote horticulture in farm homes. The society plans a history of Iowa horticulture and has asked the state printing board to publish it. The state department of agriculture is urged to curb tree pest losses and fund an educational campaign for bee disease control.
Mrs Sumner Knox of LeMars was moved from Sioux City back to Plymouth County jail amid court scrutiny. Deputy Sheriff Leo Hentger cited lawyer and public interest as reasons for the transfer. The case involves the buried body of Mrs Knox's elderly mother and a separate inquiry into her husband.
Leon-Martha M. Aldridge 55 of Mason City pleaded guilty before Judge George Johnston to a charge of cheating under false pretenses. She received an indeterminate sentence not to exceed seven years at Rockwell City for swindling thousands from victims across 14 states by selling 6 week old pullets and other poultry without delivery.
Police Chief H A Alber orders city jailers to reclaim every dish issued to prisoners after meals to stop dishes used as noise makers. Dishes bent by prisoners banging them against ice and doors prompt the action and accountability for missing ware.
The Japanese cabinet approved note denies discrimination against Americans in China and says the open door policy remains. The exchange followed an October protest from the United States insisting on equal treatment for Americans in China.
Germany orders Dr Hans Dieckhoff, ambassador to the United States, to Berlin to report on American sentiment toward Germany and reactions to Roosevelt statements. The move follows Washington's recall of Ambassador Hugh Wilson and Hull's rebuke of Nazi policies. Roosevelt directs Myron Taylor to explore Jewish refugee migration from Germany.

He cited three delinquency factors: family maladjustment, economic status, and health. About seventy five men attended a dinner at 6 30 with accordion entertainment by John Yousling and community singing led by Dr Arthur Atack.

John L. Lewis, the Iowa coal miner who rose from mule skinner to head of the CIO, was re elected president of the committee for industrial organization after a brief convention demonstration. The CIO blocked a move to endorse Roosevelt for a third term but signaled future action on the New Deal.
Sixty eight members were added to the county Red Cross chapter since yesterday's Journal report, pushing membership beyond 506. Ainsworth school, with ten teachers and the janitor, is at 100 percent Red Cross. Offices of Dr. Dwyer and Dr. Droz and the Simpson finance firm are also at 100 percent. Rhuel James Dalhover, 2nd man for the Al Brady gang, was executed in the electric chair at Indiana State Prison for the murder of State Trooper Paul Minneman during a bank robbery chase. He offered no words before death and was semi‑carried to the chair.
Melvin Carl is jailed in Washington county for a third time since October for issuing a bad check. He attempted to escape yesterday evening as Constable H G Richardson and officers pursued him. two shots were fired to frighten him but he fled, then was recaptured two blocks away and brought before Justice J E Bovee where he pled guilty.
Ed ward L. Moreland of Boston told a joint congressional committee TVA costs will require $10,352,000 yearly to sustain current low electricity rates. He argued TVA omits private utilities costs and that private firms would incur a $20,000,000 annual loss under present rates, with total TVA power costs at $34,488,000 and power revenue of $24,126,000 leaving an annual deficit.
DES MOINES Three more deaths push Iowa 1928 highway toll to 385. The report also notes a string of arrests for Carl including issuing a false five dollar check at the Congress tavern, and prior jail terms for intoxication license violation and attempted escape.
Dr. Ralph Atkinson of Los Angeles, moderator of the United Presbyterian general assembly, spoke at the United Presbyterian church urging members to evangelize personally. In Newton Iowa a synodical superintendent of missions presided at a church dinner held at 6 30 with four moderators party members giving brief light talks. About 125 people attended the dinner and visitors represented several churches in Keokuk Presbytery across southeastern Iowa.
