The Evening Journal corrects a caption mix up naming Al Fritz as president of the Washington Education Association in a Tuesday photo. Fritz, a Washington schools teacher, attended the proclamation signing for American Education Week.
A Pleasant Plain residence owned by Joe Mineart was nearly leveled by a Tuesday noon fire. Firefighters from Brighton and Richland battled the blaze and drew water from a Brighton tank wagon to fight the flames.
The public swine flu clinic in Brighton will be held in the Brighton school gym on Saturday November 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. The flu vaccine will be offered to area residents, according to the public health nurse office.
The Highland Community School District Board will meet in special session Monday November 22 at 7 p.m. at Highland High School to ratify the master contract for 1977 78 and handle other business. All meetings are open to the public.
Russell Lonergan aged 19 from Ionia received a suspended eight year prison term on an involuntary manslaughter charge connected to the death of his grandfather in West Union Iowa.
Fanne Foxe, once dubbed the Argentine firecracker, recuperates at home after an overdose of tranquilizers that sent her to Norwalk Hospital for several hours. Agent John Carmen says she told him she took the pills to sleep a long time, and hospital officials confirmed a four hour medical treatment before her release at about 8 p.m.
Des Moines reports 61 percent of voting corn producers reject the proposed voluntary checkoff on one tenth cent per bushel. Of 3,460 valid ballots, 1,711 voted yes and 2,795 no while 54 were disqualified. The plan would fund a producers board for research promotion and market development.
A legislative staff report contends the Iowa Department of Social Services has neglected mental health care, citing inadequate staffing and poor long range planning. It urges coordination among mental health institutes and better links between state and community care centers to prevent patients from falling through the cracks.
