Washington reports Philip Murray in his final act as CIO president urged dropping active wage and price controls. The annual report, to be presented at the rescheduled CIO convention, argues inflationary pressures have subsided and a deflationary risk exists, urging removal of the comprehensive control program.
Washington authorities say servicemen who wrote letters home describing H bomb tests may face criminal prosecution for violating atomic security. Gordon Dean of the Atomic Energy Commission notes investigations aim to discipline or prosecute violators under task force security rules and the 1946 Atomic Energy Control Act.
In Pittsburgh David J. McDonald was named acting head of the CIO United Steelworkers by the executive board. He is seen as a strong candidate to succeed Philip Murray with a February 10 referendum in view and has long served as Murray’s close aide.
Mr Nicola's sister Mrs Lizzie Batie of Webster South Dakota died Friday evening. Funeral services will be held there Wednesday afternoon. A Child Health Conference is scheduled Friday November 21 from 1 to 2 30 p m at the Washington County Health Unit with appointments via call 488.
Four persons paid fines in the mayor's court. Robert H. Christner and William A. Hemmings were fined for speeding while Max Embree and Roman Vs. Wakula were fined for improper parking.
Weather Des Moines Iowa cloudy and colder tonight with showers ending except extreme east. Some snow flurries in extreme northwest. Lows range from the 20s to 40s, higher 40s in the southeast. Tuesday remains cloudy and colder with highs 35 to 45. Wednesday partly cloudy and warmer.
Informants say General Mark W Clark will urge President-elect Dwight D Eisenhower to deploy additional Allied divisions for a fresh United Nations offensive in Korea. He will also seek a blockade of mainland China and authorizing air attacks on Manchurian bases, citing limits of the South Korean army and the need for arms priority to Europe.
Riverside hosts a white elephant sale by the Riverside Community Riding Corp that netted about 2500 dollars. Cash donations helped reduce the indebtedness on the Riverside community building purchased a year ago, which cost 37000 with a 5500 mortgage. Corn donations sold at 1.39 per purchaser helped raise funds.
Members of the Washington Moose lodge will hold an initiation on Wednesday evening November 19. A free oyster supper will be served.
County Treasurer W E Howell announces preparations for selling 1655 auto registration plates on December 1. This year Washington county stops reserving plates, ending prior early-application practice and will issue plates strictly in order of receipt.
Mrs. Jessie Hoff 44 died Saturday at the Restopia nursing home in Columbus Junction where she had lived seven months. Funeral services are set for 10:30 Tuesday at Stacy funeral home with Rev. Edward Taylor of St. Joseph's Church. Burial in Columbus City Cemetery. Hoff born August 12, 1908 in Galesburg Illinois. Survived by husband Oscar and four children Donald Robert Richard and Shirley Speidel of Davenport, mother Mrs. Brachen of Burlington.
County Rural Young People organization will hold a meeting at the Farm Bureau building Tuesday at 7:30 PM. On the agenda are a Des Moines tour and a dance. All rural young people interested in joining are urged to attend.
Eight people died in Iowa on Sunday in a series of accidents including a fatal Missouri traffic crash. Harold Ivan Priest 41 Oakland Ia killed on Highway 71 near Lee's Summit Mo in a head on collision. Ardath Coleman 35 Oakland hospitalized in Kansas City. Three farm youths Lester Miller William Wyant and Thomas Dale all 16 died when their pickup crashed into a tree near Marengo. Omer Brown 20 Riverton killed when his car hit a truck driven by Charles Hamilton Hamburg with Hamilton severely injured. Eugene Arrick 54 near Missouri Valley found dead under a tractor. Mrs Harm Green 87 died from injuries in a two car crash north of Bellmond. Esabell Schmidt 29 died after her car struck by a Illinois Central freight crossing. Her mother Minnie Schmidt 67 died in the same crash. A two year old boy Dannie Keith son of Kenneth Keith died after falling from a second story window in Greene.

Washington sources report John L. Lewis and Harry M. Moses urging Roger Putnam to approve a $1.90 per day wage rise for 850000 soft coal miners. They warn of unrest and possible strikes if the board’s $1.50 raise stands, saying the increase is essential to prevent disruption of American industry and to reflect miners’ special needs. Moses testified at a public hearing, arguing the Wage Stabilization Board acted unpatriotically in denying the full amount.
Fire destroyed a night club and two nearby tourist cabins on Highway 218 near Charles City. Damage was estimated at $100,000. Waitress Inca Pepe of the Castle Club reported smelling smoke and seeing the building engulfed in flames.
A dire toll mounts from recent air disasters across North America and the Far East with more than 80 dead or missing. An air rescue fleet of five planes searches a C-119 missing near Alaska with 20 sailors aboard while a radio hint from Elmendorf Base fuels hope. In Korea area crashes claim at least 55 dead or missing, including a C-119 that plunged into a hill near Seoul east, leaving 11 survivors and 44 bodies recovered from rugged terrain. A civilian crash near Dalhart Texas and another Navy plane mishap in Massachusetts add to the tally, though two flyers escaped unharmed.
Thomas J. Wysoke, a former Brighton resident, died November 13 at Mercy hospital Davenport after a two week illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at St. Josephs Catholic church East Pleasant Plain with burial there. He was born September 14 1885 in Indiana to Albert and Francis Wysoke and lived near Brighton before moving to Davenport two years ago. Survivors include his mother wife two sisters Kathryn Wietty Martha Black and three brothers Martin Wesley Frank Westray and Joe Wesley.
A fire destroyed several cabins and damaged three others but all occupants escaped unharmed. Firefighters arrived quickly and contained the blaze with no reported injuries or fatalities. Investigators are assessing the cause and extent of the damage.
Farm Equipment United Electrical Workers members at International Harvester plants return to work after almost three months. A new three year contract grants a general seven cent hourly raise, eight cents below the initial UE demand. Flat rate workers gain one to five cents more per hour.

Washington officials logged 2.08 inches of rain with 1.47 inches before 7 am, ending over two months of dryness. The central state saw the heaviest totals, while Osceola and Des Moines reported 2.49 to 2.92 inches. A cold front moves in tonight, delaying Iowa pheasant season to Tuesday.
Washington reports that the hydrogen super bomb now joins America’s atomic arsenal. Officials describe it as vastly more powerful than the A-bomb, with first test devices expected soon and its exact role in defense still under policy review by President-elect Eisenhower.
