Emil Schneckloth reported a thief entered his Davenport home and stole his billfold containing $174 from trousers kept under his bed while he slept. The incident highlights a bold burglary as the asleep victim missed the crime.
The Waterloo Bank & Trust Co. closed in 1925 and now awaits properly identified depositors at the office of Ira W. Blough, clerk of the Black Hawk county courts. The largest individual claim is $709 by Mrs. Mina Walter.
Spokesmen for 70 Estherville Packing Co. employees said they will not join the Committee for Industrial Organization union. C. I. O. organizers from Fort Dodge have been informed of their decision.
A group of unnamed donors contributed 61,400 to buy an iron lung for Fort Dodge’s St. Joseph Mercy and Lutheran hospitals. The sponsors and donors were not disclosed. The iron lung is ordered and will arrive in about two weeks.
Mrs. Hazel Billett of Charles City and her 3-year-old son left Forrest Biliett for Audrey Preston of Marble Rock in a case described as the eternal triangle. The report names distinct parties and notes the husband and father left for another woman.
A severe blaze in Dallas Center swept nearly half a block of the business section aided by a brisk wind. The town water tank, drained for repairs, held only 20 minutes of water, forcing firefighters to use chemicals and dynamite until a new water supply was arranged.
The thirteenth annual Iowa high school music festival at the University of Iowa will run May 5 6 7. At least 34 events are planned with schools split into classes by size.

Highlights include Highland electing Ray Lambert as chairman and Robert Nicola as vice chairman amid signed farmer applications. Crawford chose Earl Ferguson as chairman with L H Rinner as vice chair and eight other roles filled. Secretary Frances Perkins presented a Labor Department control plan for wage hour reform to the House Labor Committee as administration allies predict a substitute bill. Iowa corn crop praised for drying weather as husking nears completion amid cattle feeding and reports of cornstalk poisoning concerns.
Iowa State Senator A. Claire Dewey challenged the planning board to show a constitutional path to grant homestead profits to farm tenants. He criticized the board as a propaganda arm against the homestead tax preference and old age assistance act, urging neutrality and full disclosure of taxes avoided by the act. Dewey noted tenants increasingly see landlords willing to enable tenancy-to-ownership moves, and urged the act to be treated non-partisan while opposing credit claimed by opponents.
Congressman Edward Eicher formally protested to Post Office officials over a new star routes order affecting Burlington to Washington branch service on the C B and Q railroad. The plan promises $9,000 annual savings and earlier incoming mail plus later outgoing mail, with a temporary effective date of November 15 and a promise of full hearings. Eicher will press for full consideration of citizen representations to favor the greatest number affected.
Mount Vernon Cornell college trustees meet to discuss finances and future policy. President Burgstahler reports current enrollment of 612 strains capacity, leading to a 600-student limit for next year after a vote by 22 trustees.
The Methodist choir will present Maunder's English cantata Song of Thanksgiving next Sunday evening with soloists Mrs. Milo Sorden Loren Sutherland Mrs. Lowell Dodds Miss Elma Rice and Mrs. E D Morrison Jr in a large production directed by Mrs Bennsa Warren.
Orville Caldwell captured a wild female hog that had roamed north of town for months after sprinting and cornering it in a hog house. Neighbors Ralph Livingston and John Miller argued over ownership, Livingston claiming prior ownership, Caldwell citing capture, Miller noting the animal fed off his corn all summer. a compromise by butchered division was considered.
In Prairie du Chien Wisconsin on November 17 the widowed mother of 12 was acquitted of murder in an hour and a half jury trial. She testified she shot her husband Edward Heisz during a struggle for a shotgun and insisted the shooting was accidental. The case closed with her release as a free woman.
Mr and Mrs Aubrey Ostrus are due to arrive home today from St Louis Missouri where Mrs Ostrus stayed with relatives for three weeks Mr Ostrus went to fetch her Saturday Elmer Guenther accompanied him as far as Swanwick Illinois to visit relatives and will return with them
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shaw of St. Joseph Missouri arrived this morning to stay through Saturday at the home of Mrs. Shaw's aunt Mrs. W McFarland They plan to travel to Davenport to visit relatives there after their stay in town.
At Leon Beatty post meeting it was announced the county Legion gathering will be held in Washington on Dec 7 with Maynard Brown in charge and invites extended to all county posts. The Oyster supper at Crone's Shack on the Iowa river is planned for Nov 29 and about 126 members are now paid for the new year.
Mrs. H. E. K. Seigie has returned to Chicago following a visit with her daughter in law Mrs. Jean Seigie and grandchildren Don and Joan.
Dr. John Wesley Potter of Mt. Pleasant, a veteran Iowa Methodist minister, will address the Methodist men's Club Thursday after a 6:30 dinner at the church. He remains vigorous and eloquent after years of pastorates and recent lectures in Indiana. The dinner is free. club members are guests of the committee. All men of the church and Sunday school are invited.
Mrs. Rose Reid, Red Cross roll call chair, said canvassers have reported 271 in dollar memberships for the coming year. Many workers have yet to file reports, with ward totals from Ward 2 at 88 and Ward 4 at 53. County towns have not yet reported, expected Saturday. Tyrone district in Dutch Creek township reports 100 percent officer enrollment: Dave Temple, Ruth Sheets, Fred Sheets.
Three automobile accidents occurred within two hours on a stretch of No 2 west of Washington yesterday afternoon between 3 30 and 5 30. One man was taken to the county hospital with minor injuries and three cars were damaged along with a wagon.
Washington county farmer and legislator Ste wart Stewart named as one of nine members of the Iowa advisory committee to aid the farm security administration in administering its Iowa program.

President Roosevelt sought support for his agricultural program at Mount Vernon marking the 75th anniversary of the Department of Agriculture. Henry Wallace read his address in bed at the White House due to illness, noting Washington's views on a national board and the long-term need for policy to aid farming. Washington’s foresight contrasted with later tariffs, farm mortgages, and life insurance links to farmers.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Pagitt of Centerville spent the weekend in Washington visiting Mr and Mrs John Custer and Mr and Mrs Willis Richards. Mrs Custer and Mrs Richards are daughters of the Pagitts.

A hospital based chest clinic in Washington County conducted 103 X-ray exams yesterday. Thirty five percent were rechecks from July. the effort is funded by Christmas seal sales and coordinated by Iowa Tuberculosis Association and the state health department with local medical society support.
