Handkerchiefs offered at 2c and 3c for Se. 40 dozen worth up to 20c each. 10c to 12c items include fine embroidery, plain hem-stitched, linen initial handkerchiefs. some up to 30c. At 20c and 25c claim greatest and best handkerchiefs sold. very fine embroidery and new styles not seen elsewhere under 50c.
Today in court the Bybee case saw attorneys present arguments before Judge McCoy. The day highlighted major filings and dispositions including Merchant and Haighler divorce actions with alimony requests and continuances, and a long marriage case where a divorce was granted. the wife obtains the home and ninety acres while the husband retains one hundred ten acres.
Mrs Stella McChrystal Shafer aged twenty three died suddenly from a heart failure at her home in the Smouse Building on East Washington Street after a brief illness. She married Wil Shafer on April last, eight months and eight days of wedded life. Survived by many relatives including Charles Robins and Mrs Hannum. Funeral tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. conducted by Rev Thorne with interment in the new cemetery. Also notes Co A 25th Iowa reunion at Capt D A Boyer’s home in Washington County with roster of members and former officials.
George W. Hough died at his home five miles northwest of town after a lingering illness with consumption. Born February 8 1832 he had lived in the county about thirty years. The funeral from New Slaven church drew a large crowd to the burial.
The county board finished proceedings with many bills tied to the recent election. In county totals the registrars election boards and supplies bill reaches about 1500. The broader nationwide spending from the election is a large sum and aids circulation helping the new administration.
The county boards of Supervisors in the congressional district will meet at Burlington this week to discuss each county’s interests. Members of the board will be present. G. T. Matthews of Riversides travels today. H. T. Reynolds and D. Carris left on the Narrow Gauge last night.
W S Coburn and George Taylor form a pipe organ factory at 171 173 Lake street Chicago to build the large organ for Austin Illinois. The venture follows Coburn as the last head man in Jackson Pipe Organ Co and aims for success in the local industry.
Mr and Mrs A H Wallace depart yesterday evening on the Narrow Gauge for a visit in the east. They will visit Mrs Wallace s brother in New Castle Penn.
The forecast notes showers Tuesday with snow flurries later today, partly cloudy and much colder tonight. Wednesday brings generally fair weather with a colder southeast portion.
The attraction drew a large audience at The Graham, praised Richard Gorman for high class comedy in the first act but censured for vulgarity in the final act. Murphy and Moore were well received, aided by the former partnership with Prof. Mackin.
Last evening a new orchestra composed entirely of home talent appeared at the Graham and gave a bit. The ensemble drew good audience enjoyment. Members include first violin Harry McConnaughhey, second violin P. Wiedenbeck, Hass violin Chas Stump, piano F. Nicolo, cornet Y. Matucha, clarinet C. Strain.

In Ainsworth area a thief snatched a gold watch from Wim Turbott’s home before fleeing toward town. Mrs Turbott confronted the man in the yard and forced the suspect to drop the watch. Turbott and a hired man chased the offender, but he remains at large as Sheriff Teeter is alerted.
A newspaper comment laments the GC RT and PL railway company for failing to install flagman gates at crossings west of the depot. It notes that no approaching train is visible until one begins to cross, urging action to improve safety.
After a lively game yesterday evening, the golf club gathered at Col and Mrs Scofield’s near the golf field. Most of the dishes were prepared by club members, including baked potatoes in ashes and a roasted chicken enjoyed with relish.
The church members announce a social at Alf Chilcote’s home three miles south of town. A few locals will attend. Proceeds support the Methodist church building and activities.
Walker Whiteside with the strongest legitimate company visits Washington for The Merchant of Venice at The Graham. Whiteside plays Shylock with 82 year old J L Saphore supporting, a veteran of Booths Barrett and McCullough. Seats on sale Thursday morning at C H Wilson's office.
The state of Iowa v. J. K. Black was settled in Justice Rogers' court after multiple postponements. Black paid the costs of salt, ending the case. Citizens express interest in hearing Bryan during his winter lecture tour, with increased speaking fees. A Thanksgiving supper and a dance in Music Hall with Mason's Orchestra are announced.
