Severe rainfall has pushed Alabama rivers above flood stage, inundating miles of farmland and towns including Birmingham and Northport. One death is reported near Tuscumbia, with extensive crop losses totaling about 2 million dollars. Crests forecast along the Coosa and Alabama rivers threaten further damage.
Walter Olson, winner of the national corn husking title at the Paul Benz farm near Platte City Missouri, told reporters his son Charles is gravely ill. The 25.27 bushels edged out twelve rivals as Henry Holmes placed second with 24.7, with other winners from Iowa Nebraska Indiana and more than 10 000 spectators watching the eighty minute event broadcast nationwide.
Telegram reports the death of C. W. Reynolds of Wiseton Saskatchewan Canada. He leaves a wife formerly Alice Stewart of Washington and four children Harry Charle Vera and Hazel all of Wiseton. Surviving siblings include Mrs. George of Washington Miss Sadie Reynolds Mrs. Catherine Graham Ab Reynolds of Chula Vista California and Dave Reynolds of Los Angeles California.
A national missions conference was held at the Presbyterian church on Friday with representatives from Columbus Junction Haskins Bethel Crawfordsville Brighton Keota and Cotter present. Speakers included Dr Hallowell of New York and Dr Calsee of Asheville North Carolina as part of Town City presbytery meetings directed by the church board.
Jacob Lambert a Marion township farmer died at 7 45 last night at his home seven miles southeast of Washington after several weeks of kidney illness. Funeral services will be Sunday at L A Jones funeral home at two oclock with interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Born February 17 1854 in Austria he came with parents to the United States as a boy, lived in Dubuque Wellman and Marion township for 32 years. He was twice married first to Maggie Buttman. three children from that marriage survive and eleven with his second wife Anna Doran including many grandchildren and great granddaughter. He leaves a sister in Dubuque and was raised Catholic but attended Pleasant Hill Christian church with his family.
Des Moines forecast says the southern and eastern sections of the state will get more rain tonight or tomorrow. Warmer conditions this evening will drop later with chilly temperatures noted statewide. Des Moines reported 26 above zero as the low, with fair conditions elsewhere in Iowa.
At noon the national missions group was entertained with dinner at the Green Mill Cafe, providing a midday social interlude during their program.
Colorado prison guards thwart another escape attempt at the state penitentiary in Canon City as Governor Adams probes October riots that left seven guards and six convicts dead. Clyde Smith reports a ten foot tunnel near the south wall with tools found. five convicts placed in solitary. fifty crude weapons uncovered. Warden Crawford says charges await a guard linked to the riots and civil service actions loom for others.
Stateville Illinois reports extra guards and detective squads from Chicago amid a suspected convict plot to dynamite the new penitentiary. Guards search the prison for explosives as unrest continues after the Illinois supreme court ruled ten year robbery sentences require full terms before parole eligibility.
Mayor John W. Applegate appealed for active parental cooperation to report suspected smallpox or other contagious illnesses to health authorities. He warned of possible school closures for unvaccinated students and potential prosecutions for failure to report. Vaccination seen as key to preventing an epidemic. Also notes Mrs. Stella Sheckley visiting Keota and staying with her son Carl Hardin near town.
Secretary of War Good shows improvement after an appendicitis operation. Walter Reed hospital reports rally after morning sleep and lower temperature. Doctors focus on clearing infection in the right lung as blood infection lingers and patient remains weak.
At the November meeting Capt. Jay O Brown urged morale support for Troop F of the Iowa National Guard as enlistments threaten the unit. Carl M. Keck presented airport requirements and praised an Iowa Commerce report, with attendees in strong support for an official Washington airport.
Purdue and Iowa clash in a midwestern bowl showdown before 26 000 fans in Lafayette Indiana with Purdue driving for a conference title. Harmeson and Woerner connected on key passes while Purdue special teams pin Iowa inside their 20 yard line. The Boilermakers led 7 0 after a second quarter touchdown by Woerner.
Inspectors from Davenport attended the annual inspection of Bethlehem Commandery Knights Templar. The order was conferred on one candidate and the gathering reported an excellent inspection with strong attendance.
Mr Mackenzie reviews Kendrick field southwest of town noting favorable aspects and needed changes. Mr Keck mentions potential airport revenue including aviation training fees and sale of gas and oil.
Youth 4H club members fill the central ring of the Midwest's largest stock exhibit as nearly 3,000 attend. Judging calves lambs and pigs underway with teams from five states. Oklahoma leads in team and individual rankings with $95,000 in prizes to be shared among junior and senior exhibitors.
Schedule for next week's Commercial Club bowling series announced with matches each evening Tuesday through Thursday. A special Monday meeting at eight to discuss the lineup. Teams include White Blue and Red squads led by captains Buchanan Knotinerus Hinshaw Custer Holmes Little Bailey Miller Hull and others.
Albia Junior College defeated Washington 12 to 2 after two long forward passes set up a first quarter touchdown and a fourth quarter score. Washington led by Fuhr repeatedly drove deep into Albia territory but could not cross the line, finally scoring on a late safety.
Washington nov 16 the senate advanced the agricultural rates in the tariff bill and prepared to take up the sugar tariff debate monday senator borah urged postponement but chairman smoot secured agreement to begin sugar talks after the weekend the young guard of twelve republican freshmen led by vandenberg Allen Patterson Herbert Townsend Hastings Kean Goldsborough Hatfield Walcott McCulloch and Glenn backed long sessions to speed passage while coalition republicans Norris and borah resisted a fixed plan.
