The agricultural section of the tariff bill advances with increased duties. Senator Copeland delays adjournment for overwork concerns as agricultural rates are approved including milk and cream, cheese, live poultry, soy bean oil cake, and rice duties.
Chicago reports Iowa will challenge Purdue for the conference title with three other Big Ten games offering position battles. A win by Iowa over Purdue would keep the conference title race open, while Purdue seeks to clinch if victorious in Lafayette. Northwestern Minnesota Indiana Illinois Wisconsin remain in the mix.
Mrs. Sarah Backman of State Center heads the Iowa Eastern Star after being elected at the closing session of the annual convention in Des Moines. Other officers include Roy F. Short of Waterloo as associate grand patron and Adah G. Thompson of Cedar Rapids as grand secretary.
Lemmon's pharmacy announces a contest ending November 23 with a desk set prize for the best story under 200 words explaining why one likes to trade at Lemmon's. Rev. Carl Klein is named to assist in judging, with two more judges to be announced. Originality counts over length within the limit.
James Velek, a day mechanic for an air transport company, admitted stealing parts to assemble an airplane in his barn hayloft. He told Judge Francis Borrelli he had not planned how to remove the finished craft, joking he would have torn down the barn.
National Book Week will run November 17 to 23 with emphasis on teaching children to read good books. The Fortnightly club plans ads and essays for sixth to eighth graders and fourth to fifth graders, plus Christmas book gifts to Iowa City Children's Hospital patients. Library programs include daily book reviews at one o clock and school talks by junior high and high school girls.
Des Moines reports another egg throwing incident as Drake University students target the home of Dean of Men Raymond Davies. Earlier, Des Moines University students protested by throwing objects at trustees and storming an administration building amid tensions over disciplinary actions and campus vandalism. A dummy effigy of Dean Davies hung from a tree on campus, signaling ongoing anger over investigations into a kidnapping and arson at Ames.

Ainsworth High School auditorium filled as the junior class staged Much Ado About Betty. The cast received hearty laughs with interludes of orchestra, glee club numbers, and a piano duet. The show repeats tonight.

Five bidders paid 8502.50 to buy Eliza village in western Illinois. They acquired the village general store drugstore barber shop several houses and 538 acres of land with a late afternoon sale delayed by mud. Owner John Bishop said the buyers got a bargain and was satisfied.
The program committee and President S A Dickerson announce the 1950 Washington Chautauqua opening August 13 and closing August 20 with Sandall Players in the opening comedy drama. Lecturers include Julius Von der Loch and C Ray Hansen, with musical acts by the Killarney Colleens and others. An open Saturday date remains to be filled.
In Oakland California on November 15 a bridge game turned heated as Herbert Strowbridge allegedly struck May Samuels with a panean tin over seating in the match. Mrs Pancantin filed a citation against Strawbridge, insisting on blunt talk and action.
Washington November 15 The House Republican leader Tilson told President Hoover the house could approve the 160 million dollar tax cut before Christmas. The plan would set annual income tax rates by the treasury near year end, permitting use of any surplus from temporary revenue boosts for taxpayers. A December joint resolution would fix that year’s tax rates.
West Chester J. D. Dayton notes rough Johnson county gravel roads compared with Washington county. J. D. Booth paints his barn and improves his farm edge of town. Frank Anderson paints No. 2 buildings, making a fine farm home. I. E. Coffey nearly completes barn on Number 2. Dayton Frederick, a piano tuner and namesake, visited Richland and impressed Dayton.
U P Dress rehearsals mark the eve of the American Royal livestock show in Kansas City. Arrivals include Carnation farms horses from Seattle and prize cattle from California to Wisconsin. The event gathers top longview farm horses and entries from across the nation as stalls fill for the midwest premier exhibition.
Approximately sixty Washington fathers attended a Hi-V banquet at the Y M C A community room where sons paid the bill. Clifford Reinert and Edith Boileau performed, George Jones welcomed attendees, Julius Enslin spoke for the dads, and Rev Carl Klein closed with a talk on father son relationships. The atmosphere was warm, with generous servings and a focus on moral guidance.
Luther Day and three associates were fined a total of 300 dollars for operating a show on Sunday and for Sabbath day convictions. Day faced 200 dollars for license violation plus 50 dollars for Sunday exhibition while his son Richard Day and Dean Schlief paid 25 dollars each.
Judge J. C. Patterson adjourned district court until next Monday. Jury trials from the November term are scheduled to start that afternoon. A settlement was reached yesterday in the case Cora Lowry vs Mare PD Crandall, which had been in progress briefly.
Lisa Karl and Albert Klarisse were sentenced to death by guillotine in Dheims France for killing an aged inn keeper Mille. Karl led a brigand band and beat the victim with a wine bottle. Klarisse aided in burning the body with gasoline. Karl, once deemed sane, faced notoriety as a possible witch amid prior prison terms.
Announcement of an IA YMCA conference for young men to be held next Monday at 6 15 pm includes a 40 cent dinner followed by a session to discuss basketball season plans and other association interests. Members or prospective members are invited and asked to notify Gale Fisher or leave word at the Y office.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elli Grayson at the county hospital this morning. mother and child are not yet well but hoped to rally soon.
The Department of Agriculture will apply paper bracelets stamped with official approval to about 500,000 turkeys this year. About 100 graders across the country will assess the crop and assign grades Ty. Prime or G. vs. choice to young birds and U. S. Prime mature to older birds meeting standards.
