West Berlin police halted about 3000 angry youths who tried to disrupt a Communist rally drawing 8000 East and West Berlin supporters. The event underscored fears of a renewed blockade and strained food and fuel stocks as Berlin prepared for December elections.
A 150 person reception honored Vernon Wittrig grand warden of IOOF Covenant 101 and Zimri Rebekah No 58. Lodges from 20 communities attended in the Washington 100F hall with readings accordion solos and dances. Local officials and past grand lodge officers spoke as Creston Madrid Ames and other nearby towns were represented. refreshments followed the program.
Funeral services for Douglas A Cole aged 23 who died in an air force plane crash Wednesday will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Washington Christian Church. Rev Carlyle Smith will officiate. Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
A UPI report says a taxpayer suit halted $19 741 severance pay plus a 1100 monthly salary to Little Rock School Superintendent Virgil T Blossom after his dismissal and board resignations. Judge Murray O Reed issued a temporary injunction. the suit alleges illegal diversion of funds.
Washington residents showed strong support for a school reorganization plan. Jaycees collected petitions at open house events at Lincoln and Stewart schools, with many parents and supporters signifying they want a vote.
Washington High School seniors staged their annual class play before a student assembly Thursday afternoon. The sole public performance is set for 8 o clock this evening in the high school auditorium with tickets available at the door.
A court of honor will be held Saturday at 7 30 p m in the Methodist Church by Boy Scouts of Troop 237. The program will start at 7 30 p m, with parents urged to attend and interested persons invited. Warren Dare, Scoutmaster, reports demonstrations by each patrol. Awards in tenderfoot, second class and star Scout divisions will be made and merit badges presented.
Wallaces Farmer and Iowa Homestead report mid October poll shows 50 percent favor a new plan eliminating corn acreage allotments and offering 65 percent of parity or 90 percent of three year average price as loans. Old plan would cut allotments 15 percent with about $1.20 a bushel supports.
Campaign chairman Everett Meeker reported $23518.95 in pledges and contributions to date, about 97 percent of the yearly quota. He urged remaining contributors to join promptly to ensure a complete 1958 campaign success.
An intensive search continued in Caroline county Virginia for a husky Negro who shot two white women to death in a rural home on Thursday night in front of five witnesses. The gunman tied and threatened residents, took change from a purse, and fled after a struggle with Kenneth Van Allen who aided a bound witness. Van Allen was hospitalized after escaping through a window. the incident followed a piano lesson visit and a separate county teachers meeting update is noted later in Washington.
Governor Loveless outlines a six point plan to reform Iowa schools focusing on efficiency and economy. He cites rising enrollments and inflation, proposes reorganizing high schools, widespread television and audio-visual aids, subprofessional aides, twelve month terms, and scientific management to cut costs and educate all youths. He warns current spending does not match teacher salaries or outcomes.
Moscow dispatch reports Premier Khrushchev tied Bulganin to the anti party group expelled from Soviet leadership in July 1957. He outlined a seven year plan to boost industrial output 80 percent with aims to double steel production by 1965, lift worker incomes and national income, and place Russia first in world production by 1970.
Employees of the Towa Southern Utilities in the Washington district gathered at the VEW hall for their annual dinner and employee service emblem presentation. Executives from Centerville attended as H. L. Mann honored workers with emblems by tenure. Ted Johnson will succeed retiring district manager Harry Turner. Program followed the dinner with entertainment and remarks on company growth.
Arthur L. Hamilton died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital Davenport after a three year illness. Final rites at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Hill Frederick funeral home Davenport followed by graveside services at 3:30 p.m. in Keota Cemetery. Born near Keota Sept. 6, 1883, he married Bertha Simmons in 1914 and farmed there before moving to Davenport in 1954. Survived by wife three sons Robert and William of Davenport Max of Como rd ia Kansas one sister Mrs W C Holmes of Wauwatosa Wis three brothers Frank of St Paul John of Des Moines Merle of Sigourney.
Defense Secretary Neil McElroy said Washington is reappraising its need for IRBMs and ICBMs, signaling a move away from basing missiles overseas. He noted that US ICBMs with 5500 mile range could be preferred, while Atlas and current Jupiter Thor programs proceed. NATO plans may be altered as a result, with Italy and England receiving Jupiter missiles and France resisting IRBM deployment.

Dr John R Carter says the compound targets Factor V and Factor VII deficiencies, rare conditions often linked with leukemia or cirrhosis. The study will begin under a 5873 grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Jesse Linch Washington Junior High School principal announced the seventh and eighth grade honor roll for the first nine weeks. Students must have a B average. Seventh Grade rooms list and eighth grade room rosters named with multiple students.
Washington police seek two local boys missing since last night. Aged 14 and 11, they were last seen in blue jeans and jackets. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police. The pair has vanished before but returned home by morning.
Harris B. Jo Washington County Hospital Administrator was elected president of the Southeast Town Hospital Council at a Mt. Pleasant meeting yesterday. Jones will assume office Jan. 1, 1959. The council includes hospital administrators from Fort Madison Keokuk Burlington Muscatine Mt. Pleasant Fairfield Keosauqua and Washington. The group meets six times a year.
