Reach accord on contract at Highland

Negotiators for the Highland School District have reached a master contract for 1978 79 and the Highland Education Association ratified it Thursday. Superintendent Dennis Bishop said the board will consider the contract at 7 p.m. Monday at the high school. The proposal calls for a 300 increase to 9750 in base teaching salary, with overall teacher pay rising about 5.34 percent this year. Other provisions were not disclosed pending board action.

Man reports missing wife after 1968 disappearance

In Salina Kansas a 32 year old man told police he wanted to file a missing persons report for his wife claiming she has been missing since 1968. He said he was just starting to get impatient.

Child abuse investigator aims to keep families intact

Frank Butera, 29, protective service worker for Washington County, treats abuse cases with counseling over policing. He aims to keep the family together unless parents refuse help or treatment fails, often working in the home and coordinating with Juvenile Probation to place children in protective custody when needed.

A 33 ton dynamite cargo on a parked freight train exploded at Iri near Seoul, killing over 50 and injuring more than 1,000. The high school staged Merton of the Movies a delightful satire on silent film making with Greg Wiley and Jenni Harris leading. Canine police units face funding cut in Iowa

Iowa Crime Commission will not fund canine units unless justified by demonstrated need. In Woodbury County six dogs support the sheriff, with other units in Pottawattamie Linn Waterloo Cedar Rapids Conrad Grundy Center. Waterloo’s dog begins tracking and may later sniff drugs. Polk County previously ran a program now dropped. Costs exceed 14 thousand dollars per dog yearly, including officer salary, training, vet, food, and gear.
