Repn Iowa Rep. Dickinson urged Republicans to back Frank O. Lowden of Illinois for the 1928 presidential nomination. He argued that with Gov. Smith’s popularity and electoral votes in doubt, campaign behind Lowden in border and rural states is imperative to protect against loss.
Denver authorities probe an arson attempt on a Colorado and Southern railroad trestle near Walsenburg to cripple coal shipments amid the I W W strike. State police reinforced Colorado coal fields as 2000 workers vote to keep walking out while large mines stay closed.
Washington November 11. Representatives of theatrical enterprises told the House Ways and Means Committee the theater business is in danger of extinction in the United States. Ligon Johnson of the International Theatrical Association said the spoken drama business fell by 60 million dollars last year. He noted the tax is a burden that must be relieved though not the sole cause.
Des Moines reports cold northwest winds rekindling winter across the state. Temperatures expected to fall to 10 above in the northwest by tomorrow, 15 to 20 above in the south and east Saturday morning. A new Nov 10 heat record of 77 degrees was set, with past highs of 76 in 1897 and 79 in 1915 noted.
About twenty Washington youths will travel to Cedar Rapids for the annual state conference for older boys held November 25 to 27. Secretary Harry Kreider of the Washington Y M C A reports the program features Dr. John Timothy Stone of Chicago as headliner and Arthur N. Cotton of New York as another major speaker, attracting leading high school age participants from the community.
In Webster City Iowa, Manuel Romero shot his divorced wife Mrs. Manuel Romero in a residence last night and then killed himself. The couple, married five years, divorced two years earlier, had a history of violence including a prior knife attack. Mrs. Romero was listed in critical condition at a local hospital today.
National Commander Edward Spafford of New York calls Armistice Day address for a universal draft law to ensure peace. He links the draft to navy buildup to a 5-5-3 ratio from the Washington Disarmament Conference and honors fallen Marines in France.
Armistice day observance in Central Park drew a large crowd with a brief program led by T. L. Brookhart and Legion bands. Students held school ceremonies at eleven o clock and stores and offices observed the day with closures.
Armistice Day marked by ceremonies across Iowa towns including Des Moines and Creston. Legion posts fired salutes, taps sounded, and a one minute world pause occurred at 11 am. Schools closed for a half holiday while college games and dances capped evening events.
Ruth Elder, the first American woman to attempt an Atlantic flight, returns from the voyage with companion George Haldeman. She reaches quarantine aboard the Aquitania at 10 a.m. and is taken to the Battery for city honors alongside Lindbergh and Byrd era heroes.
County Agent W C Molison notes a strong year for farm clubs with the baby beef project starting December first while pig club feeding begins March first. Frank Reed from Iowa State College aided in rules as about twenty boys are expected to join and several already enrolled. Dwight Booth and Donald Kerr won at the Iowa state fair will attend the International Livestock Show in Chicago November 26 to December 3. Keith Wells will exhibit the champion Hereford and joins the club with high prize chances.
Secretary Harry Kreider of the Washington Y M C A and Richard McCleery, Y's Men district lieutenant governor, with Ted Brown A Dickerson and Russell Jennings visited Burlington to gauge interest in forming a Y's Men club there. A committee was named to canvass the situation and decide on organization.
Edwin Griffith and his son Edwin traveled to Burlington after the death of Mr Griffiths infant granddaughter aged one month. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Sowzel, known here as Miss Mary Griffith. Pneumonia caused the death yesterday afternoon.
Students faculty and townspeople joined in a Simpson College Indianola celebration as the Ames college-city observance featured the Iowa Missouri football game as the day’s standout. Fort Madison officials urged nearby towns to join a large morning parade downtown.

At a special meeting Cedar Rapids sewer engineer Howard R. Green outlined a proposed southwest sewer district in Washington. The council unanimously approved instructing the engineer to prepare a preliminary plat and assessment schedule spreading costs over the present main sewer area with later plans for lateral sewers and a sewage disposal plant pending city solicitor guidance.
At Portsmouth navy yard the V-4, world’s largest submarine, slid into the water after a 30 second float. Naval authorities called the launch the most perfect ever as the vessel joined Uncle Sam’s undersea fleet.
Washington November 11 The executive officers of the American Farm Bureau Federation the National Grange and the Farmers Union of America plan a joint program for farm relief. They failed to agree on relief and Muscle Shoals measures due to conflicting convention policies but did reach consensus on 34 legislative matters at the two day session.

Miss Fay Freshwaters of West Chester visits her sister Mrs. George Breitenbach for several days. Miss Dorothy Jones of Brighton spent last night in Washington with friends. Martin Whittaker traveled to Davenport for a short stay. Miss Lucille Montgomery of Chicago visits her parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry Montgomery. Miss Ruth Annis of Iowa City spends a few days in Washington. Mrs. Arthur Sanders visits Keota for the day. Miss Harriett Phillips goes to Fairfield for the weekend with Parsons College friends. Hubert Beal, student at Iowa City, overnight with his parents and travels to Brighton today. Willis Howell visits Brighton for the day. Mrs. William Shannon returns from Ainsworthy where she visited friends.
The War Department announced Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh is ordered to active duty at Selfridge Field Michigan from November 9 to December 31 with his consent. He accepts to serve his annual duty alongside other Army Air Reserve members.
Nick Grba dies in Fort Madison ending a seven year struggle after being sentenced to life for the 1920 murder of Mike Baldizar in Mason City. He was convicted for placing dynamite near Baldizar’s home and detonating it. A new trial followed a supreme court reversal, and a second verdict upheld life in prison amid commutation petitions. Grba was known as the prison butcher.
Sioux City Iowa mayor Stewart Gilman was connected to the state's first horse and buggy bootlegging case. Federal agents arrested Barney Rosenthal, owner of Rosenthal transfer and storage, and seized two horses Ike and Mike with altered liquor in the wagon. Rosenthal posted a $1,000 bond to free the animals. Woodbury County anti saloon league sought an injunction against the mayor after learning he owns the Rosenthal building.
London marks the ninth Armistice anniversary with two minutes of silence across the capital as buses and crowds halt. wreaths are laid at the Cenotaph and Westminster Abbey as Manchester Birmingham Liverpool and other towns hold services and patriotic addresses note Britain’s sacrifice in World War I.
