History’s largest electric power failure darkened 8 states and Ontario for hours, trapping 800,000 subway riders in New York and disrupting transport nationwide. Restoration began 5:28 p.m. EST, but the cause remained an open puzzle needing rapid investigation.

Power blackout blamed on massive northeast line failure

Upstate New York power loss drained New York City generators, triggering automatic shutdowns to avert damage. Con Ed said a main transmission line opened and caused a reverse flow, with Indian Point and Kent Avenue units out of service briefly. System operator Edward Nellis coordinated CANUSE interchanges as the outage cascaded. Authorities noted the outage required hours to restart plants and restore service.

Kalona Man Lewis Zook Dies at 86 in Iowa City

Lewis D Zook 86 of Kalona died this morning at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a brief illness. He was born October 4 1879 in Greentown Indiana and moved to Iowa at 21. He married Clara Stutzman in Kalona October 27 1905. Funeral arrangements are pending at Yoder Funeral Home Kalona. Surviving are two daughters Barbara Mary Ellen four sons Leroy Hannibal MO William B Kalona Oscar Weatherford OK Vernon Town City rural and 17 grandchildren three great grandchildren a twin brother Albert Wellman and a sister Mrs Albert Shlabaugh Sugar Creek Ohio.

Fall 4-H Camp Open to Older Members

Registration urged for a two day fall camp at State 4-H Camp Madrid on November 20 and 21. Iowa participants must sign up by November 12 with a 9.50 fee covering transport meals and lodging. Harvey Holden Named First Vice President at FS Services

Harvey Holden of Washington was named first vice president of FS Services Inc at the annual meeting in Peoria Illinois. Holden has served on the board since the firm began three years ago Everet C Phelps of Rockton Illinois is president for the coming year. The meeting reported growth through mergers and expanded facilities with FS merchandise sales up five percent over the prior year.

Court house to be closed Thursday

Washington County court house offices will be closed Thursday in observance of Veterans Day. A number of other county state and federal offices will close that day. Some local businesses may not open but most will observe usual hours Thursday.

Marines search north of Chu Lai in major Viet Cong sweep

U S Marines landed 12 miles north of the Chu Lai airbase in search of a Viet Cong force estimated up to 4 000 men. Intelligence put seven battalions and three guerrilla companies in the area as Marines moved in waves of landing craft. American casualties last week were heavy with 70 killed and 237 wounded across units including the 1st Cavalry Division and 101st Airborne.

SIOUX FALLS South Dakota UPI recalls midwestern recollections of a massive power failure nine months earlier that blacked out parts of seven states during mid-winter. The Jan 28 outage was traced to a broken small connection wire at the Fort Randall power station near Pickstown South Dakota.

Eisenhower Shows Good Spirits After Early Hospitalization

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, age 75, woke at 4 a.m. in good spirits at Fort Gordon Hospital Augusta, after arriving for chest pains. Doctors said tests required an empty stomach and noted stable blood pressure 145, with no complaints and continued good appetite once tests completed.

Redlingers help Kansas student recover balloon message

Beth and Jim Redlinger of near Washington found a seventh grade Emporia history balloon message in their soybeans six miles south of Washington on October 25. Wayne Midtley of Emporia had sent three helium balloons on September 24. this one carried a note asking to be contacted about where it landed. The balloon drifted from east central Kansas through Missouri and Iowa before landing on the Redlinger farm.

Preliminary work on highway 92 near Ames

An Iowa State Highway Commission survey party led by Party Chief A. Don Wyant has established a temporary field headquarters in Washington. The 1968 primary program plans widening, resurfacing, additional right of way and reconstructions on Primary 92 from the Keokuk County line to West Chester. Members include O. N. Stensland M. L. Stensland L. A. Wheeler J. F. Pierce and Jay Husmann. The design cannot proceed until the survey is completed.

Mrs. McCormick 90 Dies in Muscatine

Mrs. Charles A McCormick a Conesville resident aged 90 died Tuesday at a Muscatine convalescent home. The body lies at Walter J. Wittich funeral home Muscatine with arrangements pending. She was born in Conesville daughter of Albert J and Elizabeth Brockway. She married to Mr McCormick of Columbus City October 9 1901. Survived by husband two sons two daughters and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral Friday for Hugh Jones 77 in Salem Welsh church

Funeral services for Hugh Jones will be held Friday at 1 30 p m in the Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church with Rev Charles B Hawkins and Rev Richard Peterson in charge. Burial will be in Cambrian Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home is handling arrangements. He died Tuesday Nov 9 1965 at his home 321 West Second Street. Born Sept 16 1888 in Wales he came to the United States in 1911. He married Bessie Rees in December 1915 who died July 2 1934. Survivors are five sons Thomas Elmer Lester Rowland John Harold Jones William Hugh and Robert Evan plus 15 grandchildren.

Time changed for Duncan funeral rites

A change in the funeral time for William T. Duncan of Columbus Junction was announced. The rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction. Jones Funeral Home of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
