Iowa’s 11 presidential electors will convene at the statehouse Monday December 16 to cast the state’s electoral vote for Wendell Willkie. The decision follows a ruling from Atty. Gen. John Rankin’s office issued Friday after a request from Gov. George Wilson.
Sam Spurrier 66 editor of the Mount Ayr Record News died suddenly from a heart attack. He was a Mason Odd Fellow and Church of Christ member and a Republican. Survived by his wife and four children including Franklin who worked with him on the paper.
Three men paid fines totaling 30 dollars for using hunting dogs after dark before the hunting season. Conservation Officer John C. Jago identified the offenders as R. E. Venter, 43, Waterloo. Frank Neith, 43, Route 6, Waterloo. and Wallace Dankenbring, 21, Hast Waterloo township.
Edgar Anser a foreign correspondent warned Germany would "crack us tomorrow if she were free to do 80" during a Iowa State Teachers meeting. Mowrer of the Chicago News urged strong aid to Britain, arguing defeat of Britain would be a catastrophe for America and urging continued supplies.
Clara Adrian files in district court claiming Jule Kasper caused injuries and mental anguish by a dog bite on May 22, 1940. She seeks 5000 dollars actual damages and 5000 dollars exemplary damages, alleging Hal kept the dog unrestrained and medical treatment was required for injuries to her right arm.
Cedar Rapids report says Louis Clausen of Blairstown, 52, was crushed when three heavy dismantled wagon bases toppled at the implement store where he worked. Autopsy cites multiple fractures and severe head injuries. three men aided in removal of the parts from about 10 feet.
Waterloo district judge Jude R. Hasner ruled that a worker who quits one firm and later loses another cannot collect unemployment benefits from the first employer’s account. The decision overruled a July ruling by the Iowa unemployment compensation commission that granted Varl Rhode of Waterloo compensation from benefits earned at the Iowa Public Service Company gas plant.
Florian Drahon 57 a farmer near Fairfax was shot to death while rabbit hunting on his farm. Linn county deputy sheriff Harlan Synder said the 12 gauge shotgun slipped from a log pile where Drahon had placed it as he talked with carpenters Howard Wagner and Howard Zachery on an adjoining farm. The weapon discharged as it fell.
Mrs. Rose Hettle Red Cross roll call chairman lists twenty six Junior Red Cross schools in the county. Each room pays fifty cents to St Louis for a year’s Junior Red Cross News and a flag was provided last year. November displays are encouraged. Roll call shows two hundred percent in Nicola and Harmon and Haskins School reports 100 percent membership. A special reel The Flag of Humanity is shown at the State theater.
Phalanx members hosted a two course dinner for twelve at the YMLC with James Birney as chef. Guest Dave Elder spoke on advertising while Charles Morris showed how a display ad is prepared. Dick McIntosh drew last, signaling next dinner cook.
G W Kirn principal of Abraham Lincoln high school Council Bluffs was elected president of the Iowa Teachers Association with 310 votes to 267 for Fred J Miller of Waterloo. J L Davies Cresco was named member at large of the executive committee, A Atchison Washington elected president of the Iowa association of school boards with K H Sawyer Shenandoah as vice president and Mrs M B Brinter Yale as secretary.
Clifford Ingle and Robert Barnett were sentenced to fifteen days in the county jail by Justice of the Peace KR W. sore in Brighton on a charge of undue celebrating. The pair were arrested after a recent disturbance involving a brawl and promiscuous shooting in the town.
YMCA announces closure on Armistice Day from 11 am to 5 pm as disclosed by Secretary Leigh W Soule. The notice states the facility will be shut for Armistice Day observance.
War department says central training camp for the seventh corps will relocate from Iowa to Missouri. The plan calls for about 65,000 acres in the Mark Twain National Forest southwest of Rolla with 53,000 acres from private owners and the federal government already acquiring 12,000 acres. The original Iowa site in Decatur and Wayne counties is discarded due to water supply concerns.
Mr and Mrs Leslie Elcher attended a marker unveiling for Nathaniel Fellows a Revolutionary War soldier buried near Coralville Johnson County The ceremony at Highway 6 included remarks by Rep Thomas E Martin with Mrs Hoffman presenting a life sketch The state highway commission accepted the marker and will maintain the site Two of Fellows descendants attended the event
Des Moines Chief engineer Fred White told the Iowa Executive Council that a four mile dike would be needed to protect lowlands if the Cedar River dam is built at Moscow in Muscatine County. The council is reviewing the First Iowa Hydroelectric Co-operative of Muscatine application for a permit to erect a 1000 foot long dam across the river at the Moscow site.
In Des Moines a mixed Greek and Italian business group met to declare a fellowship in democracy. They stated their priority is loyalty to America and to become brothers, despite a history of conflict between their homelands and loved ones back home.
French leader Philippe Petain responded with Arctic courtesy to King George VI’s late October message of friendship and confidence. Diplomats said Petain’s reply was largely negative, mentioning no German threat and omitting any reference to damaged or fired upon French naval forces and bases.

Wayne Sherman, 27, Davenport, nearly drowned in the Iowa River. Dave Downey, a senior commerce student from West Liberty, witnessed the incident and pulled him from the water, reviving him with artificial respiration.

In Budapest on November 9 police arrested 39 and detained over 100 in a nationwide sweep against Hungarian Nazis accused of planning to kidnap Regent Admiral Nicholas Horthy and set up a Nazi regime. Authorities said 236 grenades were found as part of the operation.
