A column describes a Granary collapse on the G. K. Comstock farm north of Sulphur Springs. Eight thousand bushels of Buena Vista county corn poured to ground as walls gave way. Arrangements were made to shell exposed corn.
Iowa City report says Prof. Fred J. Lazell of the State University journalism school is fully conscious and steadily improving at University hospital after a fall from a ladder at his home two weeks earlier.
Clint on route 4 J F Marlowe of Maquoketa harvests 132 bushels per acre from a field on his farm. Known for high corn yields he concentrates on hybrid varieties and aims for the corn yield crown of Iowa.
Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt received a 1000 dollar fee for addressing the state teachers convention in Des Moines. The payment was routed through a booking bureau and will be donated to charity as per her practice. Previous association speakers included Theodore Roosevelt at 2000 dollars and Mary Garden at 2500 dollars.
Dr. L C Howe of Muscatine sustained a fractured jaw and injuries when his car was struck at a grade crossing by a westbound Golden State United. The vehicle was badly damaged and Howe was buried about 20 feet from the impact.
Delbert Hunn a 77 year old farmer near Charles City believes his luck is holding up while hospitalized for a back injury from a hayload fall. In the past six months his wife Mrs Hunn also broke an arm in a porch fall. He later hurt his arm after a cow kick and then sprained an ankle when a cow kicked again after a cast was removed.
A farmer named Claus gen, 33, Palmer died instantly after being pulled into an overloaded corn picker. His wife and four young children survive. Dr. F. KE. Heath, coroner, said no inquest will be held.
Mrs A C Botsford 29 of Monroe suffered head cuts and bruises when a coal lump rolled from a passing coal truck and shattered the Botsford car windshield. The accident occurred near Monroe and she received treatment at Skiff Hospital.
In Burlington a woman identified as Mrs. Paul Lowe became a mother two hours after her husband, 30, died in an Iowa City hospital. She later dropped flowers over his coffin from her hospital bed in a poignant farewell.
J L Terry known as Lloyd Terry, former Washington resident, is president of the Q and C railway company. He has served the company twenty years and held prior posts in the Santa Fe, Colorado and Southern, and the Denver and Rio Grande. He joined Q and C in 1916 as western representative in San Francisco. In October 1927 he was elected first vice president, a post he held until his February election as president.
The city council held a special meeting to hear the committee report on Oral Mayo's beer license application. The council unanimously rejected the license after considering the request for the North Iowa avenue site formerly Joe's Tavern, following the October denial of Joe Simmering's renewal.
At yesterday evening's council meeting engineers from the state highway commission started staking the proposed road from the end of South Iowa avenue to Elm Grove cemetery. Blueprints will be given to the highway commission then the city council and board of supervisors. The goal is to have preliminary work done and a construction contract ready by early next spring. In the meantime the road has seen partial improvements through temporary repairs.
Councilman W B Dupuis of the water committee reports a test well near the city waterworks is sunk to 227 feet. It remains undetermined if enough water flow exists to justify drilling a shallower well for softer water.
Secretary O E Schmidt of the Chamber of Commerce says bean shops barber shops and all stores in Washington will close all day on Armistice Day. Banks and the courthouse will observe the holiday as usual. Barbers will open the evening before the day to serve customers.
Unusually high corn yield reported from Vince Marek’s farm six miles northeast of Washington. Field of 20 acres produced 119 bushels per acre at 75 pounds per bushel. Marek notes 192 rows and estimates 940 pounds per row. Planting DeKalb Hybrid this year.
Detroit November 9 Eleven thousand men were thrown out of work as the Hudson motor car factory main plant closed after a CIO union strike in one department.
Officials discuss mixing supplies with the current hard water from deep wells. Mr Du Puis suggests sinking another test pipe if the existing line does not produce the needed quantity for a reliable water supply.
Treasury figures show Washington County holds about 60 516 in outstanding veterans bonus bonds. An estimated 33 620 in bonus certificates remain unconverted while 242 064 in bonds have been cashed. Data from Rep Wright Patman and VA figures through Sept 30 and Oct 15 support these estimates.
The county council fire and water committee announced the newly equipped fire truck is in commission after extensive local overhaul. Mayor Lloyd Lytle and council members inspected it at the fire station, noting the 151 gallon water tank and full complement of lights and hose for rapid response. Washington mechanics led most work, with Dupuis Reid and Orr praising the effort and cost savings versus a new unit.
Norwalk coal miners Matt Dorr and his son Virgil were killed when their car hit a gas electric train near Norwalk. Injured were Woodrow Rinke and John Hughes. Iowa coal mine deaths raise 1937 highway fatalities to 465. Tate’s survey covers 43 auto train fatalities and 15 injuries in 32 crashes through November 1.
President Roosevelt declares the current momentous issues require re examination of political social and economic conditions to determine necessary adjustments for the well being of all the people in Washington on November 9.
Dale Wright 38, president of the union air terminal, shot and killed his wife after she taunted him for discovering her kissing his best friend. John Kimmel 36, airport traffic manager, was critically wounded following a night club outing.
Haitian foreign minister Georges Lejar alleged that between 93 000 and 6 000 Haitians were massacred by Dominican troops who entered the republic to work in cane fields as he sought US aid to avert looming war.
The truck was finished by Bud Fields, Warren Stewart, and John Rohrer, with Vic Trosky of the International shop also contributing to the work.
Washington town issues proclamation calling for renewed Red Cross memberships during the annual Roll Call from November 11 to Thanksgiving Day. Mayor KR Lytle urges all residents to join or renew, praising the Red Cross work in year round and during flood relief efforts in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys.
Judge Bechly announced the November district court term with non jury hearings starting November 15 and jury trials beginning November 22. Jurors and the grand jury have shifted reporting times with trials listing multiple named cases and guardianship matters among the non jury docket.
Two groups spoke before the city council over the world war cannon on city hall grounds. The American Legion urged restoration with a foundation and possible relocation, while women objected to its presence as unattractive and a potential hindrance to peace. Three young children of Mr and Mrs Everett Richard son died when their family trailer caught fire on the outskirts of Sterling Colorado. Andrew age 4 Charles age 2 and Bobby seven months perished in the blaze. The mother was burned while trying to rescue the youngsters. The father works in a beet field and recently moved here from Akron Colorado.

Iowa faced nine disasters since March 1936 requiring Red Cross aid. Over the last 20 months floods fires tornadoes and explosions struck about every 68 days, claiming seven lives injuring 68 and damaging 481 buildings. Red Cross volunteers helped 1,783 families across events.
Des Moines reports Governor N G Kraschel warns the corn belt congressmen must back the agricultural bill or it may fail at the upcoming special session. He called the measure the year's most important Iowa farm legislation and urged unity with cotton and tobacco interests to avoid excluding corn.
The county Sunday school convention will be held Thursday November 18 at the Kalona Methodist Church for an all day session. The theme is The Fields Are White Unto the Harvest. Howard Benn Jr. is president of the county Sunday school organization.
Des Moines reports 16 000 to 20 000 farmers lost corn husking work due to mechanized huskers. Ray Murray WPA assistant administrator for Iowa says each corn picking machine replaces three men huskers and at least 6 000 pickers are operating in the state.
Italian papers warn that the Berlin Rome Tokyo tri power pact against communism could become an anti Russian alliance. Russia issues a second protest over the signing of the pact in Rome on November 9.
Four ministers spoke at a Keokuk presbytery conference at United Presbyterian Church with about 100 attending. Rev. J L Cottrel described young people’s work, followed by Dr. E F Kimmelshue on reclamation promises, Dr W A Pollock on stewardship reclamation, and Dr J W Bickett on reclaiming the lost and lapsed. A similar meeting is planned in Grinnell with the same speakers.
