MeDkucn Iowa UPI reports a single-engine plane piloted by instructor Richard Spero crashed four miles northwest of Keokuk County town, killing him. FAA investigators will determine the cause.
Dennis Walter Steele, a 20s Charles City man, was arrested Thursday night in Des Moines by a state Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent and the Charles City Police Chief in connection with a nurse's stabbing death in Charles City earlier in the week. He was returned to Charles City where an open charge of murder was filed in magistrate court.
A mother, Lillian Orr of Exeter Township, Pa., is charged with child abuse after her starving family of six sat in a stalled van. two relatives died, her husband and daughter also perished, and authorities say pride may have kept them from seeking help. The mother and three of her sons were admitted to a hospital as malnutrition cases. Sheriff Felix Work said papers were not yet served due to her weakened state. Hospital spokesmen confirmed the mother and sons William Jr 12 Joseph 11 and Gregory 7 remained in poor condition.
Equador Quito UPI diplomats predict the Organization of American States will vote to end the decade old embargo on Cuba amid behind the scenes lobbying. The United States awaits the decision and the diplomats say Washington could accept the outcome if the OAS ends sanctions despite pressure from right wing Latin American allies.
Newark report says James Meer a Wyckoff New Jersey accountant won 300000 from his family after suing to recover funds tied to a 500000 trust. He alleged bigotry for marrying Geraldine Pennachio of Ridgewood after parental objections. The Meer family denied accusations, claiming he lied to them. The couple now reside in Manhattan with Mrs. Meer working as an editorial assistant.
UPI reports Judge Frank Battisti acquitted eight former Ohio National Guardsmen in the Kent State University shootings case. He ruled the prosecution failed to prove the conspiracy to violate civil rights with the necessary intent. The trial followed the May 4, 1970 antiwar protest where four students died and nine were wounded.
In two incidents at the Fort Madison Iowa State Penitentiary, three inmates were wounded Thursday night raising recent weeks’ stabbings to four. James E. Calvert 24 Ottumwa was hospitalized in stable condition with two cuts, and Ramsey Lee Knoll 22 Lavista Neb treated and released after five minor wounds. The stabbing occurred near the southern dining hall entrance. no weapons found and no suspects detained.
President Ford's aide signaled the nomination of Andrew E. Gibson to lead the Federal Energy Administration could be dropped soon. Press Secretary Ron Nelsen said the matter is under diligent review and hoped for a near resolution. Gibson, 52, was named ten days earlier to replace John Sawhill.
