Cpt Richard Casteel aged 20 of Waterloo died in a hospital from injuries after his car collided head on with another vehicle driven by C W Kuherke one half mile east of Waterloo. Seven others were hospitalized with only one released. Casteel served overseas 11 months and had been a German prisoner of war.
Cedar Rapids men Marvin Whalen and Samuel David pleaded innocent in district court to breaking and entering and larceny charges. They allegedly broke into two jewelry stores, stealing five watches and rings valued at 1274 dollars. David posted 5000 dollar bond. Whalen remained jailed for 2500 dollars on each burglary charge and 1000 dollars on a forgery count, to which he also pleaded innocent. Police filed statements alleging their participation in the burglaries.
Grundy Center livestock dealer Onno Klosterboer, 46, died at Allen Memorial hospital Waterloo from burns suffered when a 100 gallon gasoline tank exploded during a farm fire three miles southeast of Grundy Center. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. John Brown, 48, was severely burned and remains at Waterloo hospital. Seven others injured.
Ottumwa authorities investigate a complaint by Mrs E. Alton that an aircraft flew so low over her residence that she was startled to the ground and sustained bruises. She reported the plane’s license number to police.
Wearren Taylor of Des Moines pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and waived to the grand jury at arraignment before Police Judge John Knox. The case involved breaking into Prof. H. H. Hoeltje’s home at the State University of Iowa, stealing an $18 clarinet, a wedding ring, and a suit of clothes. Taylor was free on a $1,000 bond from Polk County Jail and said he had served terms in five penal institutions.
Davenport principal Roxner Berry of J. B. Young Intermediate School Davenport is in Mercy Hospital in serious condition after a motor vehicle crash. He suffered a skull fracture and back injury when Berry's car was struck by Frank Danshee 27 of Silvis Illinois whose vehicle caused Berry's car to overturn and Danshee is jailed on reckless driving charges.

The Washington county grand jury condemned the county jail as unfit and unsafe to detain prisoners. Washington reports that Allied powers published the unconditionally surrendered armistice terms of Italy after Mussolini era collapse. Documents show the terms were largely uninvoked and effectively abrogated in February, with no territorial or reparations reference. Italy remains to pay occupation costs and receive extensions of U.S. credit to govern.
A meeting in the Y community room tonight at eight o clock invites Washington men interested in conservation to support the county chapter and lake project. Joe Ochsner of Fort Madison, vice president of the Iowa Walton League, will speak.
An Iowa boy was reportedly with Petary when a car was stolen. Police indicate the youth presence is noted though details about Petary or involvement remain unclear. Authorities seek additional information to identify the circumstances and parties.
Samuel A. Fulton of West Allis tells Brotherhood of United Presbyterian men that church members must share their faith with other men. He urges backing the Christian Advance drive and says contributions should rise with the church’s wealth and earning power. His address to Washington church members and guests was described as forceful and sincere.
The Far Eastern Advisory Commission met for two hours in Washington on organizational matters without a Soviet representative. Maj. Gen. J. H. Hillering will report on Japan under Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Russia has not communicated since powers revised the commission’s scope to secure a larger voice in Japan’s control.
More than 200 of Washington county public school teachers attended the annual teachers institute at Washington high school. Rural and town districts were represented, with 95 rural and 115 in town or consolidated schools. Notable speakers included Dr Bruce Mahan Dr Paul Kandly John Hedges Etta Cosner and others.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion will hold a regular meeting at eight this evening in the post rooms on the second floor of City Hall. New quarters on the first floor are nearly ready but plumbing delays delay use of the main floor rooms.
Delegations from United Presbyterian churches attended with M C Delong presiding. Robert Wiley led a brief program, J M Finney introduced the speaker, H C Finney led devotionals. Prayers were offered by Karl Megchelser and Arthur Peters. Ruth Nichol circle prepared the dinner served by several men.
The regular city council session convened at city hall yesterday evening with councilmen reviewing bills and discussing pending items. Officials approved routine motions and slated upcoming measures for consideration.
Judge P J Siegers opened the new term assigning two cases for trial. One nonjury case concerns construction of Clayton A Neiswanger will, set for Monday Nov 19 at 10 AM. The other will be a jury trial in Gli der et al v Shelangoski et al, a will contest beginning Nov 6 at 1 30 PM.
The Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad allocates 10000 dollars of its Victory Loan subscription to Washington county as agent R. J. Haight reports. Employees locally and across the system also buy bonds by cash and payroll deduction, all credited to their county quota.
Early returns from Hungary's first postwar election show the anti communist Smallholders party leading with 48 to 52 percent of 360 seats, possibly higher per London reports. Social Democrats about 22 percent and Communists around 14 percent, with coalition likely to form due to economic woes. Ballots were secret and polls guarded by police.
Washington county bar members attended funeral services for Attor ney Eardley Bell of Wellman who died Saturday night after a two week illness. Judge P J Siegers adjourned the district court term to honor the 46 year practitioner. Bell was active in community work including the war fund drive and Rotary club. he was a Mason and Shriner. He was born in Lincolnshire England in 1872 and practiced law in Wellman since 1899. He married Nora Glane in 1901. she died in 1930. Surviving are two brothers a sister and a daughter.
In Washington on November 6 John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers clashed with Philip Murray of the CIO over the executive committee’s composition. The session ended with Lewis winning a unanimous vote to refer the matter back to the rules committee and a note on Marine Major Paul H. Douglas’s upcoming operation. Daily labor strikes left 262,000 U. S. workers idle, including streetcar and bus workers in Washington and Greyhound bus staff across eastern and southwestern states.
