John Dawson, a drayman, killed his wife with a headshot then shot himself, dying soon after. The tragedy occurred on a Knoxville street amid jealousy rumors as the town was left in shock. the wife lingered for hours.
Reports from the Fifty-first Iowa volunteers say trains from San Francisco are running late with the rear section 120 miles behind the head. Nov 6 report from Anamosa Iowa states the state faces a major issue in employing hundreds of convicts at the state penitentiary. Idle convicts have caused insanity, and a proposed remedy is to manufacture binding twine or other goods not produced in Iowa but controlled by a trust. A minimum $200,000 appropriation would be needed for machinery if adopted. Quarry operations for private use are discouraged to avoid conflicts with private interests.
Tenth annual Iowa State Epworth League convention in Cedar Rapids closes with 1 826 chapters and 105 000 members reported by Secretary Keith. Resolution calls for keeping the state society active, condemns brutal prize fighting, seeks expulsion of Representative Elect Roberts of Utah, and urges a constitutional amendment criminalizing polygamy.

London reports delayed dispatches from Nov 2 indicate Colesburg in Cape Colony is tense as Kruger’s men threaten Colenso. Scout lines previously sent to confirm Boer movement toward the Orange River returned with uncertain signs this evening.
Rufus Puff a Democratic house member from the Partyurst district is missing from Sullivan Illinois after leaving his home three weeks ago. He told a friend he was traveling to Cincinnati to attend to a patent device he supported and then placed his affairs in order. His wife and two sons remain in Sullivan as friends fear for his safety. Puff was a leading Moultre county political figure and an ally of W. J. Bryan, with roots in neighboring counties.

Smith, Chicago banker, died in London leaving most of $50 million to his nephew James N. Smith. Jesse Hicks, Lin ton-Class student, died after neck injury from a football tackle at State University. Standard Oil closes leases in six southern Michigan counties and plans a pipeline to Detroit and near Toledo. James Adams known as Jimmie Lincoln, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after despondency.

The operation aims to trap Aguinaldo, cut support bases, and end organized rebellion by spring, though guerrilla resistance may continue.
