Voters in Washington area precincts head to the polls as turnout appears stronger than typical off year elections. Polls stay open until 8 p.m. with the heaviest flow after 5 p.m. Officials caution results depend on late arrivals.
Long Beach physicians said former President Richard Nixon remains in sub intensive care with leg pain and intermittent breathing treatments. The medical team notes he is able to walk more in his hospital room as recovery progresses.
In Pasadena Texas police charged 31 year old Robert Clark O Bryan with murder after his 8 year old son Timothy Mark O Bryan died from poisoning traced to a candy straw laced with cyanide found during a Halloween trick or treat in a two block area. The father was held on a 100000 bond as investigators described a hastily called news conference and custody of the accused man.
Iowa farmers report corn harvest about 48 percent complete, just above the 46 percent average for this date, with wet corn and light test weights noted. Soybeans are 93 percent harvested, well ahead of the 33 percent average, and a week of good weather could finish harvesting and begin plowing for 1975 crops.
The council ordered drafting of amendments to three ordinances including higher water tap and stray dog reclaiming fees and a parking exemption for the 100 block of West Washington Street. A two week ticket free period for Saturday parking was extended as the city reviews the parking change. The meeting also covered police chief search notes and auxiliary police funding. Levy sworn in as new First Ward councilman with term to 1975. A cemetery space transfer fee and monthly department head attendance rule were approved. Public employee bargaining meeting attendance authorized.

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warned of mass hunger and outlined a 25 year plan to double food production, create worldwide food reserves, and improve nutrition. He urged oil rich nations to finance the effort, clashing with US official Butz over control of reserves. The plan ties food security to population growth as global talks proceed.
Federal officials arrest five people and recover about 5650 ancient Greek and Roman coins valued at 5 million dollars stolen from Harvard University’s Fogg Museum last December. Coins were found in a wooded area outside Lincoln Rhode Island and inventories will be taken by museum staff. Several others are being sought as federal charges of taking stolen property across state lines are pursued.
UPI reports District Judge John J. Sirica said he clearly heard H R Haldeman use the word Gemstone on an Oval Office tape recorded June 28 1972, six days after the break in. The judge also ruled that defendants cannot possess personal copies of the White House tapes for transcription, forcing them to listen in the prosecutor's office.
Dr. K Jean Marshall announced on Monday her departure from Washington to return to medical practice in Arizona. She said the strain on family life and the need to spend more time with her husband and three children led to the decision, closing her Washington practice December 27 and aiding patients until December 29 while joining a Phoenix clinic in January. Her husband Richard will be chief therapist at the new clinic, and she hopes another doctor will take over her Washington patients.
