The Washington County American Red Cross accepts a quota of 62 dozen cookies for hospitalized veterans at the VA Hospital in Iowa City for the last two weeks of December. Donors should call the Washington Red Cross office. Deliver first week by December 11 and second by December 18.
Ralph Martin won the Washington mayoral race with 430 votes, a 97 vote margin over Maynard Brown who received 333. Other winners include Irv Whitham for councilman-at-large, Harold Stephens for fourth ward councilman, Walter Messer for second ward councilman, and Don Minick re-elected to the park commission. Total city turnout 1,331 amid ward tallies and scattered write-ins.
Edwin Augustine a 28 year old farmer near Washington Iowa earned second place in Iowa Farm Bureau’s top young member of the year competition. A 1966 Iowa State University graduate he now farms 420 acres with his father and oversees 200 cattle and 1590 hogs annually.
The Presbytery of Southeast Iowa meeting in Davenport adopted a recommendation to establish a new United Presbyterian Church in Washington. An administrative commission led by Dr. Jack Jervas will coordinate with local congregations to create the new church and marshal existing church properties. Until formed, First Presbyterian and Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Churches will continue separate programs.
Republicans captured the New Jersey governorship with William Cahill and Virginia with Linwood Holton in Tuesday elections. The GOP tally rose to 32 of 50 governorships, signaling support for Nixon's Vietnam policies. Nixon credited campaign power but declined personal credit for the results.
Yale President Kingman Brewster charged Senator Edward M. Kennedy with holding the Nixon draft lottery bill hostage and warned young men would not thank Congress if the measure stalls this year.
