A Waterloo incident reports an Illinois Central freight train delay of five minutes that hindered firefighters. The delay led to $250 in damage to the E. H. Cor Sepius house and garage.
More than 200 crippled children from north Iowa passed through the diagnostic teaching clinic conducted by Dr. Arthur C. Steindler orthopedist from State University hospital at Iowa City. He was assisted by Dr. L. M. Overton of Des Moines and physicians and nurses from University hospital.
Harold Zimmer, two, disappeared from his Waterloo home prompting parents and police to seek a Chapman airport pilot to search over the city. The boy was found along the Cedar river banks before the plane took off.
John Wilkerson of Tipton suffers severe facial and eye burns when molten lead from a casting exploded in his workshop. Doctors expect possible vision impairment but hope to save the sight of his eyes.
The Newton Jasper county supervisors completed public auctions of school lands in Mingo and Colfax. Fifteen parcels were offered at raised values. four sold for a total of 520 dollars. The remainder reverted to the permanent school fund via foreclosure of school fund loans.
Des Moines couple Mr. and Mrs. Eawin Forsman suffered serious facial and body injuries when their car crashed into the rear of a truck near Lisbon. The Johnson Brothers of Lake City owned the truck.
Mrs. Joe Carlyle’s cat became entangled in a washing machine while she did laundry at home in Cedar Rapids. Patrolman Walsh freed the animal by covering its paw, reversing the wringer, and Walters restarted the machine. the cat was badly cut but survived.
A $10,000 fire leveled Moravia C. A. Garners restaurant and O. C. Easters pool hall. Albia fire department aided in extinguishing the flames.
Des Moines based San Construction Co seeks permission from Iowa highway officials to pause the project near Fort Dodge until early 1938, delaying construction on the pay section.
President Roosevelt told 20,000 Catholic youth at Loyola Stadium Chicago that true peace abroad starts with peaceful governance at home. He warned that dictatorships and foreign wars are escapes from internal resentment and class hatred. James Roosevelt organized the gathering.
Ivan Norton sustained a serious left eye injury after a chisel shattered while he cleaned a boiler at St James church yesterday. Twelve glass fragments struck the eye, one unusually large, but he saved the eye by keeping the eyelid from the eyeball and seeking medical help. doctors removed the splinters and expect sight to remain.
Armistice day speaker plans in Washington were revised as Prof. Updegraff cannot attend. B B Hickenhower of Cedar Rapids, legislator and attorney, will address the Legion banquet in place of Updegraff. another speaker will fill the 8 PM address.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Washington County Post 2808 promotes a Buddy Poppy sale in this city on Saturday November 6. The emblems honor fallen soldiers and are made by disabled veterans in government hospitals, with proceeds aiding their welfare and self sufficiency.
John H. DeWild and Allen McGowan of Minnesota urged a year long plan to boost Washington county retail trade at a chamber of commerce meeting in the Y M C A. They cited government figures showing Washington county leading in retail activity and urged early advertising, appealing displays, and stronger personal outreach. Attendees numbered 135 as the group discussed plans for 1938 and a slate of nominees for the board of directors.
Donald J. Marek, a Washington county 4-H club member, will exhibit six baby beeves at the 1967 International Livestock Expo at the Chicago Stock Yards from November 27 to December 4. He enters three Herefords and three Aberdeen Angus in the junior livestock feeding contest for ages ten to twenty. Entries hail from 80 Iowa counties and nine other states.
