A University of Iowa experiment on marriage education started as Relig ion and Social Problems. Last year 40 students enrolled but this year 130 are taking the course titled Modern Marriage. About 60 percent of enrollees are coeds with eligibility limited to juniors and seniors for studying core elements of a successful marriage.
Senator Lester Dickinson of Iowa outlined a five point farm program in his first statement since the administration’s corn hog poll victory. The address before the annual Methodist conference at Cornell College presented Dickinson’s plan amid his long standing critique of the AAA.
Tabor trustees agreed to accept any endowment and last week received a promise of a cow calf. Donor is Supt W L Lee of the Bartlett Schools. The American Legion post of Council Bluffs pledged 400 dollars, the seventh legion post in southwestern Iowa to do so. Seventy five percent of the money raised by legion posts will be spent for land with the title remaining with the state legion and the land to be used for the college.
Des Moines Lyle Higens of Valley Junction wed Winnifred Dickey of Orillia in a school bus driven by the bride’s father Otis Dickey. The ceremony was moved from the Dickey home in Warren county to a highway crossing into Polk county due to licensing.
Davenport residents learn that the wife of an indicted swindler, Ruby Barkalow now Ruby Van Ness, lives in New York City and has contacted her relatives there. The woman reportedly helped prompt her husband to surrender to postal authorities.
Grinnell college freshmen will attend a series of date dinners under the Council of House Presidents. Each freshman must dine Wednesday night with a co ed and display his best table manners in the scrutinizing eye of the group.
The origin of the outlaw Pretty Boy Floyds sobriquet is traced to Mrs. Fred Fuller who cared for him in Frederick Oklahoma during 1910 after his fathers death. She recalls calling him Pretty Boy because he was slender light haired and handsome and the nickname spread among boarders.
Cedar Falls residents recall a quake about four decades ago. Roger Leavitt cannot recall the exact date but says the event startled everyone and caused walls to shake as pictures seemed to dance and a scare spread through the community.
United Press reports seven states hold elections to test the Roosevelt program as major issues influence races. Kentucky’s gubernatorial contest could threaten Democratic control. Governor Ruby Laffoon backed the Republican candidate. New York and Pennsylvania feature Roosevelt policy battles with contests for U S representatives and state legislature. Philadelphia mayoral race mirrors the vigor, while Virginia New Jersey legis latures vote, Mississippi selects a governor and local officers, and Connecticut’s cities fill municipal posts.
Two men confess the kidnaping holdup of Eugene Smith in Kansas City. Charles Shaw 20 of Kansas City and Robert Rogers 22 of Amarillo Texas admitted the crimes after a gun battle west of Winterset. Smith was released at Chariton after a wild ride and the men also claimed credit for robbing a hitchhiker of $10 near Winterset.
Des Moines reports a continued siege of cold weather with 16 to 25 degree readings across the state tonight and tomorrow. Shippers are advised to brace for ten degrees below normal as the cold spell covers nearly the nation. Iowa bars see 20 degree lows in Council Bluffs Des Moines and Charles City while Davenport and Keokuk reached 40 yesterday.
Farmers are invited to a one day event at the McCormick Deering store on Thursday featuring free corn muffins and coffee. Skelgas supplied by Scott Furniture Co. supports a display of the McCormick Deering Hammer Mill with continuous baking and grinding all day.

Plans for the Iowa Young Republican organization to participate in the national convention were announced. Two delegates from each of nine districts plus five at large delegates will vote in Des Moines caucuses to select 23 delegates. Committees on arrangements and invitations were named with lawmakers and party officials from across Iowa.

Iowa state banking department says no call for condition of state banks is being issued at the same time as the national banking department. Officials note a prior call was made in October to cover the period ending September 30.
Mrs. Orer Romine was forced to drive by a man with a pistol Friday night. He directed a long drive toward Oskaloosa, keeping lights off, then signaled turning and stopping. The suspect fled. Romine, shaken, was cared for in Washington and at home.
The freakish tropical storm that battered the Florida winter playground moved into the Gulf of Mexico with a threat to shipping. Five dead, 126 injured, and extensive property loss followed as Miami Miami Beach West Palm Beach and Hollywood endured the hurricane’s fury.
Joe Wolfe of Wolfe's Hatchery resides in Washington Iowa after his wife refused a plan to move to California. The couple visited California years ago. Joe caught the travel bug while Mrs. Wolfe stayed firm, declaring Washington Iowa is good enough for them.
At yesterday evening's city council meeting Joe Simmering was granted a cigarette license for a new North Iowa avenue establishment. He previously held a beer license. Most of the session covered routine matters with no action on street surfacing acceptance. inspection by councilmen will follow.
While recuperating, Mrs Romine described the man as large with a mustache, detailing the appearance to investigators.
Willis C. Edson, governor of the eleventh district international Rotary, urged clubs to pursue useful objectives beyond meals and talk. He cited crime reduction efforts and praised Latin American Rotarians for international cooperation while sharing insights from the Mexico City convention. A youth claiming to be Steve Hokins of Des Moines was handed to Council Bluffs authorities as a suspect in the Britt murder of James Zrostick. He was believed to be Paul Thompson of Stuart, Iowa, and was arrested at a local bakery where he had worked briefly.
Funeral services for Robert W. Thomson will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home in charge of Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church. He died yesterday forenoon after months of failing health. Burial will be at Keota cemetery.
