Iowa Democrats score landslide victory in state race
In Des Moines, Gov Harold E Hughes and President Lyndon Johnson led Democrats to the greatest Iowa victory in history. Hughes won by about 2 to 1 over Evan Hultman, while Johnson held a large margin over Barry Goldwater. The sweep included six of seven congressional seats and six new faces in the Statehouse.

Crawford boy Steven Crawford gets 30 year murder sentence
Steven Crawford, 14, pled guilty to second degree murder and received a 30 year term from District Court Judge Harold J. Fleck. He shot his father, Rollo Crawford, on October 31. Under Iowa law murder convictions require Fort Madison Penitentiary, but his age may allow transfer to Boys State Training School in Eldora.

Washington County voters backed Democratic candidates in a statewide pattern. Incumbent Republican Keith Vetter lost to Democrat James Quinn 3860 to 3713 for state representative.
