Murder Indictment Sought Against Oscar Collazo

Federal prosecutors said they will seek a first degree murder indictment next week against Oscar Collazo for the killing of Police Pvt. Leslie Coffelt during the Blair House attack on President Truman. Collazo's partner Griselio Torresola lay unclaimed in a New York morgue, while Torresola's widow and infant child were taken into custody. Rosa Collazo, 40, is jailed on a $50,000 bond for conspiring in the assassination attempt as Puerto Rican nationalists, led by Pedro Albizu Campos, are swept up.

Public Hearing Slated On Skunk River Plan

The Corps of Engineers Rock Island district will hold a public hearing at the Ames city library on November 30 to discuss flood control plans for the Skunk River near Ames. All interested parties are invited to present arguments for or against the proposed action.

Jeremiah Stover 86 Dies in Riverside Area

Jeremiah Scott Stover, 86, died after a lingering illness at a Riverside nursing home. He had lived with his daughter Mrs. Hubert Rath and previously stayed at University Hospital Iowa City. Born April 26, 1864 in Johnson County he was a farmer and longtime Sunnyside school director. Survived by seven daughters and one deceased. Funeral plans at Cathout funeral home Iowa City with interment at River Junction.

McLellans Open Store Remodeling and Expansion

McLellans store reopens Saturday at 9 am after a $25,000 revamp over five weeks. The redesign adds 900 square feet, a new floor and fluorescent lighting. Junior High Display For Education Week

A junior high display in Tom Duncan's store window showcases paper mache animals created by students. The project took three weeks and used old newspapers wire and paste. An open house at the junior high is planned for Monday evening.

The operation will run with Maplecrest plants in Kalona and Wellman, providing local turkey growers better facilities and earlier market access. Hunters urged to save quail wings and pheasant legs

Conservation Officer Dwight Bramon called on hunters to preserve the right wings of quail and right legs of pheasants during the open season. The collected parts will aid the Iowa State Conservation Commission in a bird census to assess age ratios and improve future hunting. Hunters can leave specimens at Chamberlin's Sport Shop or contact Bramon at Box 465 in Fairfield.

Community Chest nears goal as election time nears

Washingtons Community Chest drive stands about one thousand dollars from its 25000 target with noon totals. Campaign chair Robert Day hopes cleanup efforts finish soon and calls for remaining residents to donate by phone or mail. Absentee ballots total 166 as voters prepare for the November 7 election. polling places and hours are listed for each ward and township in the county.

LeRoy Hotle Elected RYP Head in Washington County

LeRoy Hotle was elected president of the Washington County Rural Young Peoples group at a Wednesday night meeting in the Farm Bureau building. Officers named for the year include Mary Knotek as vice president Lukita Sojka secretary Jo hllen Ollinger treasurer and Betty Sojka reporter. A soil conservation film titled In Common Cause was shown by Thomas Robb followed by refreshments and dancing. Chaperones were Mr and Mrs Robb and Mr and Mrs Willard Palieur.

Two Army Enlisted Men Held for Hit and Run Near Oskaloosa

Two army enlisted men were arrested in Washington by police chief Carl Hancher after a blue Illinois plate car dragged a tractor seeder and crashed near Oskaloosa. One man identified as John B. Enright. the other unnamed. The seeder was demolished with damage to the car’s right headlight and fender.

Communist Red Forces Push Allies Back in Korea

U S reinforcements moved northward under heavy rain to shore up a new defense line against about 12 communist divisions massed in the Unsan sector. Some 40 000 to 50 000 communists threatened a major assault as 500 men remained unaccounted for after a recent trap. The UN high command called the situation serious but not critical amid pessimism at corps and division levels.

Weather report shows clearing skies this afternoon and tonight with northeast winds 15 to 20 mph easing. Highs near 40 to 50, lows 20 to 28. Saturday brings sun and warmer temps 45 to 56, then Sunday windy and fair. Temperatures trend toward near normal by Wednesday, with precipitation about one tenth inch or less.
