Mrs. Alex Miller secretary of state disclosed 135 names whose DV blanks were stolen from the state motor vehicle department and hidden in Burke Park. She pledged to personally repay the state 33.75 dollars stolen from the blanks.
Dorothea Beveridge of Des Moines was elected president of the older boys and girls at the Iowa Youth conference. Sam Brown of Shenandoah and J William Swan of Clinton were named vice presidents. Pauline Shephard was elected secretary.
Two women in a Michigan plated car stopped a highway patrolman near the state corn husking contest field. They asked what the cars were for and learned the event name, remarking that so many people were needed to harvest the corn before driving off.
Ames Iowa State College students found three tame white ducks daubed with red and blue paint among wild mallards at Lake Lavern. The Halloween prank created a patriotic, though not artistic, display as the wild ducks rejected the intruders’ overtures.
Two men in Halloween costumes robbed a Cedar Rapids drug store, fleeing with eighty dollars after one brandished a rifle and forced Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Greenberg to lie on the floor while the other searched the cash register and pockets.
Somers Velva Lou Brueland died after choking on a peanut. The 19 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clyde Brueland suffered a fatal windpipe obstruction.
Eugena Dunahoo aged one, daughter of Lloyd and Mrs Dunahoo of south Nevada, died when a tree fell on her as men were cutting timber near the residence. The accident occurred while residents watched from nearby.
Elmer Carlsen 26 of Audubon is the 1935 Iowa cornhusking champion with 2 598.28 pounds 37 1 bushels a new state and national record. Elkie Hendricks Grundy Center takes second with 2 457 47 pounds net. Carlsen and Hendricks advance to the national contest in one week.
The Washington Y M C A schedules its annual campaign for funds to support the next year. A board meeting formed the 2024 finance committee of Orville Elder Don Sherman and Leslie Dunlap with about forty volunteers planned to canvass in one day starting with breakfast at 7 30 a m.
A display of old Bibles is being arranged in the reading room of the Public Library to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the English Bible. The observance runs from October to December with the exhibit showcasing historic editions and related materials.
Washington county announces the 1926 Red Cross roll call will open November 14, led by county chairman Roger Sherman. The chapter highlights disaster relief, veterans services, home nursing, first aid, and health education as ongoing functions of the national Red Cross network.
Ovid Banks Mouser, a Prairie Flower community leader near Washington, died at Washington county hospital from a virulent infection after a minor forehead injury from a fall from a husking wagon. Funeral Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home. Buried in Flin Grove cemetery. Survived by widow Kva Booth Mouser, son Stanley, one grandchild Mari Ion Anna Mouser, and siblings Fred Mouser, Anna Rogers, Jessie F. Wilson.
The League of Nations penalties committee, with 52 nations, set November 18 to begin economic and financial penalties on Italy. A boycott of Italian goods will target products deemed essential to Italian industry amid reports of Ethiopian resistance near Danakil and a mass offensive along a 60 mile Ethiopian front toward Makale.

Des Moines reports labor leaders order a vote on a statewide strike over the WPA wage scale. The ballot will occur at a Des Moines meeting on Sunday November 10, announced by John C. Lewis president of the Iowa labor federation.
Seventeen Iowa counties with 40 percent of the state's population paid 73 percent of the personal net income tax in 1984. Polk County led with 501,489 paid by individuals from Des Moines area, while Van Buren showed about 12 cents per capita. The survey names northeast and western counties with high per capita levies and cites drought areas in southern Iowa as affecting tax distributions.

First prize goes to Al Crone rt 1 Washington and J J Witterman 309 W Madison. third to Mrs Tom Rickey fourth Porter Hartman fifth Mrs Ben Briley sixth Lee Sitwell. Prizes include market baskets cereals and Butter Nut coffee. Entries require food store purchases on Tuesday and Wednesday with sales slips submitted by Thursday 6 pm. Scores set by total purchases times entries.
Dr. Dan B. Brummitt editor of the Northwestern and Central Christian Advocate will give the evening address at the Burling ton district Methodist conference at Milton on November 12 and is to be invited to speak at the Milton church night on the 13th. Dr. B. F. Schwartz plans to bring Brummitt home for the Milton event and the 13th appearance.
A reader submits three sales slips showing groceries bought on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The total purchases of $1.50 yields a score of 450 points by multiplying 1.50 by three slips. The Journal keeps slips confidential and will return them if requested. winners' scores are not published.
The body of Mrs David Mills of Webb Iowa, formerly Sadie Zilmer of Wellman, will be buried in Wellman area with a funeral at 2 PM Sunday from Champion Hill church nine miles north of Wellman. Survived by husband Virginia Ann a four year old daughter two sisters Irene and Helen and brother Everett Zillmer. She taught home economics after graduating from the University in 1925 and Wellman high school in 1921 born February 1904 married August 23 1930 after years of poor health she died Wednesday night.
Mrs B L Wilson and her son Floyd arrived yesterday from Wellman for a short visit, staying with local relatives and plans for returning home later this week.
Three gunmen hijack cars on Iowa highways. James Zrostlik, 25, is killed after resisting with his wife wounded. A Des Moines hunting party is forced to surrender, and a machine gun is left in the abandoned vehicle. Authorities hunt the trio as more details emerge.
About fifteen miles of Washington County roads scheduled for rock resurfacing this year have been completed with new surfacing, while another fifteen miles remain. The county’s Bailey quarry rock has been crushed and laid, with Ed Wahl moving to Grace Hill to crush and transport rock this fall. Wahl plans to operate a commercial quarry there using the same limestone ledge, then crush rock at the county quarry once larger supplies are available.
The studio of photographer C. H. Guther has been redecorated with a repainted ceiling and walls redone in light wallpaper. The work aligns with remodeling at the J. C. Penney Co. store downstairs as part of the building improvements.
