D. W. Bates state superintendent of banking announced Ackley State Bank in Ackley Hardin county will likely open Monday. The new bank with 25000 capitalization will take over over half of the former Bath State Exchange bank's deposit liabilities.
Six Van Horne schoolboys were injured and 15 year old Everett Meyer killed when their car collided with a machine operated by C. D. Barron, cashier of the Wim Horne Savings Bank, near Newhall.
Marion Syndergaard, 19 year old 4 H health champion of 1939, quietly married Donald E. Fish of Adel, 24, a county agricultural agent. The couple plans a wedding trip and will reside in Adel. Syndergaard previously won Iown and national health contest honors in 1930 and grew up on a Grundy County farm.
Mrs Clyde L Herring will broadcast from WHO Des Moines at 6 30 PM discussing social legislation for women related to the governor's campaign. She substitutes for her husband who attends a Waterloo campaign meeting.
Two Topeka waitresses Eddie Gieber and Artie Roff escaped their alleged kidnapers near Hornick Iowa after a ride from Topeka. They told Justice Irish they did not want prosecution and planned to board a bus back to Topeka. The escape occurred after they were held near Holly Springs Iowa.
The Rev. Patrick James Murphy, 60, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottumwa for three years, died at St. Joseph's hospital at 11 a.m. after ill health since August. He spent twenty eight years in the Catholic priesthood serving in the Davenport diocese.
Davenport Iowa Muscatine based Midwestern Wood Products was declared bankrupt Wednesday by Judge Charles A Dewey in federal district court after failing to present a defense to the involuntary petition filed August 31. The case was referred to Referee in Bankruptcy Walter A Newport.
Maquoketa H Carlisle Thomas of the University of Iowa won first prize in a state wide poster contest sponsored by the Iowa Federation of Business and Professional Women's clubs. Theresa Kolterman of Our Lady of Angel Academy Clinton Ia took second prize. Thomas’s poster advances to the national contest.
Cecil Armstrong died in a hospital after being accidentally shot by Reynold Nordstrom who was examining Armstrong's firearms collection last Sunday in Fort Dodge. Nordstrom remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
John W. Mansfield 18 of North Kingsville bought a used automobile for 10 dollars. A few hours later the car left the road and he was killed in Conneaut Ohio.
State Senator KE Hicklin of Wapello, a Republican candidate for Congress, is slated as a speaker at a Washington rally Saturday night closing the party campaign. Organizers, led by GGKE Mace, plan outdoor music by Washington groups and, depending on weather, speeches in the park or courthouse. Principal speaker will be Charles EK Miller, while Hicklin will make his first campaign appearance in Washington after earlier talks in Brighton Dutel Creek Kalona and other areas. Women are urged to attend and hear Republican views.
Stanley Baird performed a roadside rescue by picking up a live wild duck off a highway after John Lemmon’s cautious driving. The duck survived and appeared lively as witnesses, including about twenty Washington Presbyterian church youths, corroborated the event at a meeting in Iowa City.
In Mt. Ayr Iowa on November 2 after more than 40 hours of deliberation the jury remained undecided on the fate of Mrs Far Johnston accused of murdering her husband.
Des Moines reports the retail sales tax for the second quarter totalled 2 157 741 dollars, an increase of 9 100 dollars over the first quarter, according to Ray Murphy chairman of the state board of assessment and review.

Representatives from Columbus Burlington LeClaire Prairie Morning Sun Stanwood Washington Winfield and Ainsworth are expected.
Cakes and sausage were served from early evening with Shields orchestra providing supper music. Bazaar booths offered a variety of articles and a few ladies assisted in sales.
In Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania on November 2 United Mine Workers and United Anthracite Miners pickets clashed at Mine No. 7. More than a thousand men fought for two hours injuring twelve as stones flew and fists rose in a desperate hand to hand combat after the strike was called last night and pickets arrived to prevent work at the mine.
Pension Applications Chairman H. G. Richardson said the county old age assistance board has acted on 42 applications and forwarded them to the state commission at Des Moines.

Charged with store robberies and auto thefts in southeast Iowa.
Attorney Rayburn Rayburn, a Labor candidate for judge in the sixth judicial district, resides with his parents at Booth 2nd avenue Washington low. He is treasurer for a local banks group and has nine years of practice. Powell Rayburn, his son, is a practicing attorney. He attended Culver Military Academy, State University of Iowa, and Drake University Law School. He is on vacation from practice during the campaign.
Rey Clifford Ramedale, minister at Columbus City U P church, will preach at the United Presbyterian church this evening in preparation for communion services Sunday. A devotional service is planned for Saturday at 2 30 p m.
A 2:30 to 4 p m Monday radio program on WSUL launches National Fine Arts Week activities. Grant Wood will speak at the event, with short talks by Mrs. Henry Taylor and Miss Louise Orwle. The Donald Benblossom exhibit opens Nov 7 at the Journal building and runs through Nov 9 with public viewings.

Indiana Governor Paul McNutt announced that a deputy attorney general would hand over a full confession from an escape plot participant to federal authorities. Two more arrests were expected, with one reportedly a Chicago lawyer. State police had released eight people earlier, though officers said none were involved in the plan.

Sioux City police seek a radio-equipped squad car stolen last night while two officers left it to eat at a restaurant. The theft occurred in the city, with investigators continuing to search for the vehicle and any leads.
Des Moines reports that closed banks in Iowa paid 1.5 million dollars to depositors in October. Payments were made by 60 banks across 48 counties, according to State Banking Superintendent D. W. Bates.
