New faces in Washington election spark municipal shift

The Evening Journal notes all 10 mayoral council and park board candidates for Washington are newcomers with incumbents not seeking re election. Major races include mayor Raymond Minick and Lloyd Robertson, council at large Ralph Martin and Richard Paul, Second Ward Forrest Brock Julie Hanson Bill Hartig, and Park Board Dwain Tschantz Bill Whittenberg. Polls open next Tuesday 7 am to 8 pm.

Rainfall again soaks Iowa area in 24 hours

Area residents noted another .53 inch of moisture in the latest 24 hour period ending at 7 a.m. Today. With November starting damp, Washington logged 4.41 inches of rain in October, far exceeding what farmers hoped for as they finish fall harvest.

Kalona to install four way stop on Highway 1 at No 22

Department of Transportation workers are installing a four way stop at the Highway 1 and No 22 intersection in Kalona. Traffic on 22 now stops and will also stop on Highway 1 once signs are in place. Work may finish by Wednesday.

Vandalism hits town with B B gun damage

Police report multiple windows damaged by vandals using a B B gun while driving around town Monday night. Targets included Marshall Furniture, Orscheln, the high school building and Deep Rock Station. Halloween night vandalism noted as minor by officers.

Drug arrests follow raid in Washington state

Sheriff Yale Jarvis reports two more persons, Cynthia Marie Grieser and Samuel Jesse Curtis, both of Washington, jailed today on delivery of a controlled substance. Warrants issued for two juveniles on related charges amid a raid that yielded a large quantity of drugs and four arrests, with more arrests anticipated soon.

Halloween Parade Best Dressed Winners Named

Youngsters from kindergarten through sixth paraded around the square in Halloween finery on Monday night. Prizes for best dressed were awarded at the YMCA building after the program closed. Treats were shared with all participants. Kindergarten through second grade winners: Jason Heilman Vicky Moore Schenk. Third and fourth grades winners: Brett Nicholson Candy Baker Angie Horak. Fifth and sixth grades winners: Todd Klapp Cleveland Wallerich Donna Shepherd.

Band Booster drives for new WHS uniforms and events

Washington Music Boosters plan a Saturday trivia sale at the National Guard Armory to raise funds for 130 new marching band uniforms costing about 100 each plus 1000 for maintenance. They have raised around 2000 from a food concession and a 500 Kiwanis donation.
