In Iowa City Judge James Gaffney denied Sigma Nu property tax exemption. He ruled that only property leased to the state government for armory purposes is exempt from tax, while the fraternity house had been leased to the federal government as barracks for Army personnel along with 14 other university houses.
Washington based 4 percent report from the department of agriculture shows Iowa farm income for January and February this year at 308 218 000 dollars, up from 2460 357 000 last year. February income is 154 071 000 with January at 155 347 000. Last year February was 116 252 000 and January 124 105 000.
In Perry a municipal airport bond issue failed by 71 votes, 311 to 240, in a special city election. The $49 000 measure required 60 percent to pass and did not reach that threshold.
Paul Guy of Milo pleaded innocent to manslaughter and driving while intoxicated charges after his car struck and killed two Des Moines girls and injured a third. He waived to the Polk county grand jury, posted bonds totaling 5 990 for manslaughter and 600 for the driving charge, and was described as intoxicated at arrest. Police found a quart of whiskey and a bottle of rum in his car. he refused a blood test.
Des Moines area rivers fell further on Tuesday with Keokuk showing over four feet of drop as mills reopen. Northern Missouri conditions eased. Ottumwa’s Des Moines River remained five feet above bank full keeping evacuees away. Iowa City’s Highway 218 opened while Iowa River drifted three plus feet above flood level.
Three trainmen were injured, one seriously, when two Milwaukee Road freight trains collided on a siding four miles west of Manning. Westbound No. 36 struck east bound No. 184 after an open switch was ignored. No. 68, heavily loaded, could not be stopped in time.
Thelma Evelyn Flynn 21 died at 6 15 am at Washington county hospital after an illness dating from December. She was born January 28 1923 at Newman Grove Neb and lived on rural route two south of town. Surviving are her parents three sisters Patricia Mary Irene Evonne two brothers Michael and David and grandfather Edwin Laurson. Funeral at St James Catholic church Friday at nine with a rosary tonight and Thursday evening at Shermans funeral home.
Washington residents may see There's Something About a Soldier at a State theater on June 28 as part of the fifth war loan drive. Admission is by war bond, with proceeds aiding bond sales and the campaign's goal. R E Pratt, manager of the State theater, notes the premiere will boost Series FE war bonds.
G. E. Mace, county war finance chairman, calls a Friday evening meeting at the courthouse with bankers postmasters and civic leaders to plan the fifth war loan drive. The June 12 to July 8 period aims to sell 1 242 000 in war bonds, the county's largest quota, with farm leaders to be invited later as crop season eases.
Jean Atchison of the YWCA announces a girls hike tomorrow morning from 9:30 to noon, for first to sixth graders next year. Participants meet at the YWCA at 8:30. an indoor program will replace the hike in case of rain.
The war bond premiere is expected to draw a full house. Tickets are on sale at the War Bond Premiere Office in the State Theater for bond purchasers between June 1 and June 28.
American invasion troops pressed toward Mokmer air strip on Biak after repelling a Japanese counter attack and destroying 11 enemy tanks in the first armored clash of the southwest Pacific. Radio Tokyo announced Biak invasion. U S infantry pushed six miles from the landing to Mokmer field.
Duna Fur and Wool Co official B D Duwa says a car of wool left Washington for Boston via the C B Q lines. Wool collection has slowed this spring due to a shortage of sheep shearers, with moisture up to 2 percent in recent clips. He notes farmers expect shearers through August while he estimates only 35 to 40 percent of sheep have been shorn so far versus typical June completion.

Mrs. Harry Ward of Mt Pleasant spent yesterday here as a visitor and was seen touring local shops and meeting townspeople during the day.
Early morning call reports an attempted burglary in Riverside. Teenagers allegedly brought a goat into Mrs. Hotka’s Riverside bank area apartment, later placing it on a porch feeding on vines. the animal belonged to Rev. Charles McCartney.
The senate voted to cut the cabaret tax from 30 to 20 percent and approved a new national debt limit bill raising the government’s outstanding obligations from 210 billion to 260 billion dollars. A humane society blockade thwarted a plan to fly a bull from Mexico City to New York for a bullfight. A man known as goat man and his goats were reported traveling near Riverside. one goat was found dead south of junction 218 and 22, with unknown culprits and unascertained identities.
Community members credit a cordial response and ideal weather for a successful Memorial Day observance in Washington. General chairman W. Kaster praised help with the program and decorations despite some shortages, noting ample flowers and tribute to soldiers and sailors buried in local cemeteries. Farmers were busy in fields, not taking the day off.
MOSCOW May 1 The Germans attacked the Red Army north of Iasi with tanks and infantry to widen a wedge in the front and threaten a springboard for a Russian summer drive toward Bucharest. Soviet reports said the Red Army held its new line despite ongoing assaults, with fifty enemy tanks knocked out and thirty five planes shot down on the first day of the large scale clash on the Romanian front.
The 5th Army nears Rome within about 15 miles as U S troops push through Alban hills defenses. American tanks and infantry strike Genzano Lanuvio and Albano while German counterattacks test Allied lines along the Valmontone Campo Jemius belt near the capital.
