In Iowa City Marjorie Royal, employed at the Princess cafe, is chosen as the best waitress in Iowa by members of the Iowa Restaurant Owners association. Uniform carriage and personality were factors in the judging.
Detective Chief Tom Farley said he faced decisions on how to proceed with Ing Hanson a 30 year old from Council Bluffs accused of robbing four people of 16 dollars and later returning the money when they pleaded for mercy.
A mass meeting in Mount Pleasant convenes Henry county farmers to organize a Henry County unit of the Corn Belt Liberty League. Walter Rohde chairs the meeting where Tilden Burg, league president, and Walker A. Wallace of Macomb Illinois provide addresses calling for organization.
Pocahontas County coroner investigates the drowning of Lowell Lundy 15 son of Mr and Mrs Frank Lundy in a gravel pit near Gilmore City. Lundy and two companions, all unable to swim, were in the pit when the accident occurred. His body was recovered.
Rath 27 was jailed in Ottumwa on alleged illegal custody attempt of his young daughter. The charge, signed by his mother in law, says he took the child after seeing her with an unknown couple. Rath claims he has legal custody and says the girl was taken from his home as he and his wife separate.
Iown City Herbert Richards of Moscow, age 30, was hospitalized in serious condition after a fall from an electric light pole at a Tipton area farm. He sustained fractured collar bones fractured ribs and crushed vertebrae after contacting a live wire while climbing a guide wire.
Eldon Chance ten years old of Zearing died after leaping from a wagon to save a dog crossing highway 65 on the west edge of Zearing. A Missouri couple driving toward Minneapolis hit the boy while trying to miss the dog. their car struck a bridge railing and they were held blameless. Names of the motorists were not learned.
O R Latham of the Iowa State Teachers college urged frequent public proclamation of freedom of speech and inquiry as 370 degrees diplomas and certificates were awarded during the sixty fifth annual commencement exercises at the state teachers college in Cedar Falls.
Oskaloosa Iowans laborer Lawrence Medul len, 23, a drag line greaser at a strip mine, says he heard a radio flash he believes came from Amelia Earhart. He tuned low wave to 9 2010 megacycles at 11 20 p m and heard a woman cry This is Amelia Earhart Do you hear me but could not make out the words as the screeching obscured them.
Des Moines attorney Frederick Miller announces his candidacy for one of the Republican nominations for justice of the Iowa supreme court. James Bailey Cash, father of five year old James Cash Jr., says he has paid the $10,000 ransom and awaits a call directing the boy’s return. The ransom was delivered at a secret rendezvous after the kidnapers breached the Cash home with a brick to draw attention to a ransom note.

Des Moines May 31 Ins Iown farmers may receive an average payment of 3.82 per acre on allotted corn under the 1938 AAA program based on 38.2 bushels per acre and 10 cents per bushel plus 1.60 per acre under the soil depletion program. Cedar county leads with 4.71 per acre and 1.92 for depletion, followed by Black Hawk 3.99 134.9 pct and others including Tama Benton Linn Story Boone Washington Henry Cass Montgomery Page Fremont with varied per acre payments and depletion percentages.

Maurice Brayton announces that the Washington junior high band, now 55 members, will give a concert on the high school lawn Wednesday at 6:45. The program features short numbers and marches with named instrumentalists in each section.
An earthquake lasting three to five seconds rattled Los Angeles and nearby towns, shaking buildings and waking thousands of residents early today. No serious damage reported so far. Emergency services were alerted across the region.
Two masked armed bandits attacked Kilmer Seele of Bedford on highway 148 south of Corning Iowa at about 1230 this morning. They knocked him unconscious for about an hour and a half and robbed him of 250 dollars before a Kansas City salesman found him.
