Asks Haste in Action on New Taxes
In a desperate bid to balance the budget the Senate rewrote the 1922 income tax rates into a billion dollar revenue bill. The plan would raise about 225 million dollars, with rates starting at 4 percent and rising to 5 percent on higher incomes. The finance committee also approved a one cent gas line tax and a five percent tax on domestic gas and electricity consumption. President Hoover urged rapid passage of a budget balancing tax bill and proposed a three point program to balance the budget stabilize the dollar and enact unemployment relief. He criticized delay and called for economy, but suggested a limited sales tax if needed. He spoke about the need for sacrifice and warned that every day of delay worsens confidence in government.
