New York Mayor Accused in City Stock Tie During Inquiry

Samuel Seabury charged Mayor James J. Walker with violating a law forbidding city officials from owning stock in firms with city contracts. He showed that dividends from Reliance Bronze and Steel were deposited to Walker’s account before a city contract for Fifth Avenue bronze lighting was awarded. The witness Rosenbloom testified the firm received 48,556 from the city. Walker claimed bonds were given to Mrs. Walker, but Seabury alleged the coupons were deposited to the mayor’s personal account.
