Dr Bowers told the Washington high senior class there are three life philosophies as seen in thieves priests and good Samaritans. He urged graduates to adopt the Samaritan view recognizing duties to others and the community.
Announcement in the Journal describes monthly trade extension days for a year. Merchants promise timely bargains and low prices on selected stock. The first Wednesday and Thursday each month will feature special values inviting thrifty shoppers to attend and bring neighbors.
Asa K. Bartlett, 28, Blue Lake town constable, confessed sending the bomb that slain August Krubaech, his daughter Janet, and her fiancé Wm. Frank. He signed the confession as funeral cortège passed. arraignment set for tomorrow. motive cited as opposition to Krubach’s township leadership. In Brooklyn a blaze from a paint shop consumed the Taft Hotel area. A 65 year old man and an aged widow perished, while Thomas Hughes rescued a twin and vanished with others missing. Firefighters kept water on the ruin hours later. Mrs Hughes and four Nolan children were not found.
Plans are announced for a county wide automobile drive Thursday starting from Washington at 8 oclock. The circuit includes Wayland Noble Crawfordsville Ainaworth Haskine Riverside Richmond Kalona Wellman Keota West Chester Dublin Valley Rubio Brighton and back. A picnic dinner is planned at noon and committees will list participants for the day long event inviting all county residents to join.
Plans are completed for the first Washington county flower show to be held Saturday in the garden of Mrs. M. W. Bailey from 1 to 8 PM. Tea costs ten cents. admission is free. Ladies should bring plants and flowers for exhibition by eleven Saturday morning. Public event expected to attract many visitors.
Mrs William Blair aged 82 died Sunday at her home 208 East Madison after months of illness. Born August 27 1843 in Peru Indiana she moved to Washington in 1864 after marrying William Blair a dry goods merchant. Survived by sons Charles Blair and Mrs N B Law and sister Mrs Jennie Law. Funeral Tuesday at 2:30 PM at the Blair residence with interment in Woodlawn cemetery.
Des Moines reports a fifty percent increase in accidents during Safety Week as crews conclude the event.
Raincoupled Memorial Day services in Washington drew large crowds as veterans and citizens gathered. Rev J Reade McCrory spoke on citizenship costs and sacrifice while children in Uncle Sam costumes and patriotic groups participated. The parade moved to Elm Grove and Woodlawn cemeteries with speeches by Carlton Wilson and Al Baldrige and graves decorated after brief services.
The Women's Auxiliary to the American Legion sells poppies as a World War I memorial. Proceeds fund care for disabled soldiers. On Saturday large numbers were sold on streets and in business places.
