May Wheat fell to 1.25 and corn closed at 33. Oats 31. Cuba invasion underway with about 15 000 regulars ordered from Tampa and Mobile. General Miles departs for Tampa with staff as Schley and naval authorities exchange dispatches and fleets may meet within a day. Florida steamship reports successful Cuba expedition landing at Key West.
Washington May 31. The bureau of the secret service has doubled its wartime work since the Spanish–American War declaration. Chief John E. Wilkie runs a highly secret, globally active force guarding counterfeiting and espionage, with operations from Havana to Madrid. Assistant Secretary Meiklejohn relays tips, but Wilkie directs the core activity.
Terre Haute Indiana May 21 Detectives seek 8 J Slade in Ohio for bigamy after he wed Mrs Thurman in January and later married Miss Sorelda Fuller of North Baltimore. The Terre Haute wife says he was arrested for embezzlement but escaped by restitution funded with her money.
Guthrie Oklahoma territory May 31 a Seminole prisoner named Hargo imprisoned for murder confessing to killing Mrs Laird and admitting two young Indians Sampson and McGeisy were burned to death by white men last January Hargo fled after the crime from the Chickasaw nation and was captured after a chase of more than twenty two days The confession came from a letter he wrote to his sister The discovery led to his arrest Portland Indiana May 31 Samuel Marshall arrested in Monmouth charged with murder and robbery of Louisa Stoltz earlier this year a reward had been offered for his capture
General Miles and staff depart for Tampa as war reports confirm the invasion of Cuba. Some 30 000 troops are ready aboard fast transports for a multi voyage operation with four expeditions planned and insurgent support already in place to aid landings at multiple points.further details withheld by officials to prevent Spanish intelligence from learning troop movements.
Reports from Key West and Paris describe the Spanish squadron trapped in Santiago harbor with Commodore Schley’s fleet poised. Cervera intended San Juan coal, shifted to Cuba after Sampson’s bombardment, while scouts kept him pinned and his coal ship captured nearby.
The war department plans the main assault from Florida with about 20 000 regulars and 138 000 volunteers at Tampa. Additional forces include units at Mobile New Orleans and Chickamauga 40 000 volunteers. General Miles and staff headed south last night as plans were reviewed with the president.
Excitement ran through Camp Thomas over a claimed general order to move to Tampa. Only eight regiments were ordered out under Brigadier Generals Snyder and Carpenter, with plans to depart soon and regiments praised as best equipped.
