Phil J. Rupp, the popular travelling passenger agent of the C R J P railway, spent today in the city on business. He called at the JOURNAL office. Wm A Manners brought a peculiar moth specimen called lunar moth by Capt Kellogg. Marsh W Bailey, W H Butterfield, Judge Dewey and others went to Oskaloosa yesterday to attend Judge Dewey's judicial interests.
Keota Iowa June 1 special. Election on a water works tax carried by a 55 majority. Mrs J B Crooks and Mrs Cherry Holmes of Crawfordsville were shopping in the city. Miss Gertrude Smith returned from Crawfordsville visit. A marriage license was issued to A J Droz and Clara Hamilton.
Reports from Havana and Cape Haytien say Schley's squadron and Spanish warships engage off Santiago de Cuba with heavy cannonading. Private dispatches claim a severe fight lasting most of the afternoon, with the American fleet reportedly holding the advantage as operations move from Washington to field execution.
Washington June 1 A cabinet officer said no news from Commodore Schley since Monday and two to three days more are expected. Schley likely will wait for troops before a bold attempt to enter Santiago harbor and strike the Spanish squadron. Officials believe one regular regiment is on the way to support him. The plan hinges on Cervera not attempting a night sortie. The move aligns with the president’s policy to aid starving reconcentrados.
The Florida expedition landed near Havana on May 26 with a large supply haul and a Cuban reception. Rebels, 1 500 strong, with a band, moved supplies inland while Cubans reported Gen Calixto Garcia’s 10,000 men in good spirit and 5,000 more along the northern coast. Spanish positions shifted as Garcia maintained Bayamo HQ and Menocal faced Holguin after Luque fortified the city.
The Southern and Western railroads move four regiments today with two more to depart tomorrow.
