Washington county faces a quiet pre primary as polls open next Monday for 22 precincts. Republicans and Democrats prepare for county and state races with light anticipated turnout and no major contests on the Democratic ticket.
The Cedar Rapids Shrine event peaked as 6500 members arrived from Madison Wisconsin and Davenport. Special trains boosted attendance to 2000. Delegates came from seven states, highlighting a regional gathering.
Federal Judge Charles A. Dewey issued a temporary restraining order blocking Iowa from collecting a bulk station oil occupation tax. The 14 major oil companies must post bonds totaling 143000 within 30 days or the order lapses automatically.
Miss Marion E. Maynard of Des Moines and Marvin Rochelder of Moline were married by a justice of the peace at the Moline police station at 1 a.m. with Night Desk Sergeant Maurice Nelson and Officer Charles Vermeisel as witnesses. The couple then returned to Iowa City to finish exams.
A resident at a Johnson County home attacked four inmates with a pocket knife, injuring them while acting in a deranged state. Officials cited stress over pension payments as a possible trigger for the incident at the Iowa City facility.
The Iowa attorney general rules riverboat operators on the Mississippi and floating pavilions on the Iowa Short cannot obtain beer permits. Assistant Attorney General LeRoy A. Rader says no provision in state law authorizes such permits.
Norman Baker and Harry L Fisher of Muscatine filed a $50 000 suit against Tri City Broadcasting Co owners and operators of station WOC Davenport The notice served on Dr B J Palmer president of the company quotes his remark that the suit arises because Baker and Fisher were refused time on the air.
Des Moines report states four month old Wayne Quick died after allegedly smothering himself with a pillow while in his buggy on the front porch. His mother Mrs Algot Quick left him briefly to work and returned to discover him not breathing.
People along Lebieh Row in Mason City reported two dogs suspended from a willow tree in the northern section. Officers investigated but could not determine who altered the animals or the motive behind the act, with neighbors citing a possible neighborhood dispute.
Walter Lants Jr a Davenport subscription solicitor faced a $25 fine plus costs after impersonating G men at an event near Cresco and Davis Corn. Judge T. H. Goheen of Calmar imposed the penalty.
H. N. Wilkins of Crawfordville a Three Quarter Century Club member was born in a log cabin near Ainsworth near Washington County.
Des Moines reports April motor fuel sales set record with 15,108,426 gallons, sufficient to circle the earth over 36,000 times. State Treasurer Wege man notes total monthly gasoline tax receipts rose to 18,252 and directed funds to road bonds, administration, and refunds to cities and counties. In indirect taxes beer and inheritance taxes also rose.
Ames charged with careless driving by speeding .5 miles an hour. John Shipp Jr. was fined 100 dollars or 34 days in jail by Municipal Judge C Edwin Moore. He failed to appear and a warrant was issued.
Utterback and Samuel D. Whiting of Iowa City appear among candidates for governor alongside Krascher and Mitchell. Contests exist for lieutenant governor and other top posts, while Mrs. Alex Miller and Leslie C Ross contest the secretary of state race in Washington county. Edward C. Eleher faces James M. Bell in the congressional race. county supervisors M. T. Coon and Boyd Foster have no opposition in the primary.
Memorial Day in Des Moines and across Iowa honors the dead of six wars with flag draped graves and widespread ceremonies. Veterans and civic groups lead drives to decorate each soldier’s grave, including Ames where 91 year old G A R National Commander Oleg Nelson attended with veterans. One of 27 Revolutionary War heroes honored is a Crockett buried in Albia, linked to Davie Crockett from the Mexican front era.
Davenpoot Thomas Eldridge 16 was crushed to death when a trailer carrying eight tons of merchandise rolled over him. Eldridge and five other youths rode bicycles and clung to iron bars on the truck. Witnesses say his foot snagged the bicycle frame causing the wheel to bind on the trailer and throw him beneath the wheels.
Haroldry from the Seanool of Fine Arts in Ututwa will teach violin viola and cello this summer offering private lessons at seven and ten week terms and class instruction for twenty five cents weekly rental instruments available for seventy five cents. Classes begin Tuesday June 8 at eight oclock with various ensemble and instrumental sessions scheduled through Friday with multiple groups and time slots.
Supt. RE A Ralston urged dedication beyond gestures as Woodlawn cemetery honored fallen soldiers. He noted 1868 as America's first grave decoration tradition and cited four major wars and the sacrifice of men from Valley Forge to 1917 to defend democracy.
National commander Oleg Nelson in Ames Iowa on Memorial Day urged against sports events. He said the day honors Civil War dead and should not be used for entertainment or recreation.

Dorothy Wii Town City visits this weekend at the John Caldwell home as Mr. and Mrs. Glen Wilson and daughters Joan and Marguerite Caldwell travel to Iowa City to bring her back last night.
A morning Elm Grove gathering features Dr. B J Schwartz delivering a sermon style address praising progress of the republic. He cites two texts from Genesis and Emerson noting evening and morning and Man as a bundle of thunderbolts for thought.
Children and adults paid tribute to fallen soldiers at Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries with a wreath making, a parade led by Martin Whittaker and aides, and memorial speeches by Dr. B F Schwartz and Supt. K A Ralston. The event featured the Washington high school band, Troop F escorts, and decorations for veterans from Civil War to World War II eras.
