Geraldine Hanson and Gunnar Hanson of Cherokee wed in a ceremony that featured a minor name change. Fairfield city council approved final refinancing of $18,300 in grading bonds, held by Carleton DC Bed Co. of Des Moines at 2 percent interest with a $1 premium, with no objections during the special meeting.
Mrs Elizabeth H Towner of Des Moines won the first prize of half a scholarship in a national poetry contest at Drake University. Second prize of $50 in books went to Mes Berg V Thompson of Des Moines and third prize of $50 in books to Mar guerite Hoffman of Rockford.
Twenty thousands residents attended the Shenandoah Garden club annual three day flower festival. Altar decorations at First Presbyterian church won best exhibit with Trinity Lutheran and Congregational churches placing second and third respectively.
Mrs. William Cupp suffered a painful cheek cut when a bottle exploded in a bonfire she was tending to burn trash. The bottle contained shoe cleaner and struck her as it burst, causing the injury.
In Marshalltown less than a dozen Civil War veterans joined memorial services at the Cemetery of the Iowa Soldiers Home. Most veterans from earlier days remain housed in the hospital and could not participate in the short march to the resting place of the dead.
Fort Dodge Iowa Mrs Hilda Philips mother of two died in a hospital here from the effects of drinking Lysol A note she left on the table indicated she had quarreled with her sweetheart Fort Dodge police said.
The Muscatine County Farm Bureau women's chorus travels to Washington, D C for the International meeting of Farm Women, staged from May 31 to June 6. Iowa groups raised over a thousand dollars to fund the trip.
Fairfield authorities announce Rev J Walter Malone of Champaign HL will deliver the commencement address at Parsons College 57th annual exercises. Rev Norman EK Nygaard of Deer Moines provided the baccalaureate sermon in the college chapel.
Farmer Guy Lynch spotted a meteorite whiz by while plowing near Belmond. The 12 pound stone landed about 100 feet from Janeh who waited for it to cool and kept the 18 inch long stone as a souvenir.
Mrs. Ella M. Wilson of rural route 3 is noted as a Three Quarter Century club member. She was born in a one story frame house on the lot now occupied by the back room of Barclay's grocery.
Polls close as 2 421 precincts vote on candidates for state offices and party tickets. Six Republicans seek the renomination including L J Dickinson amid opposition to the New Deal while Smith W Brookhart attempts a comeback with others like Guy Linville and Edwin C Manning in Cedar Rapids.

Morrison will be held Tuesday at 10 30 a m at Sherman s funeral home with Dr B F Schwartz officiating Burial will be in Ainsworth cemetery Morrison born August 25 1850 at Jonesboro Town son of William D and Elizabeth Thornburg Morrison He lived in several places as a shoe repairman and retired in 1904 He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Journal s Three Quarter Century club Surviving are his children Ben Morrison Elmer Mrs Owen McGovern John Mrs W W Mitchell 18 grandchildren two great grandchildren and one brother Emery Morrison The family has been living with the McGovern family the last four months
The Rev. Henry B. Master of Philadelphia was chosen to succeed Rev. Joseph Anderson Vance of Detroit as moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the United States at the 140th general assembly in Syracuse New York. Dr Master had served as secretary of the board of pensions.
Clark E Brown 87 died at his Wellman home Saturday night at 8. He was a longtime barber in Daytonville and Wellman and died from flu with complications after six weeks of poor health. Funeral will be Tuesday at 2 in the Methodist church, Rev. Thomas Osborne officiating. burial in Wellman cemetery mausoleum. Born February 27, 1849 in Bennington Vermont, he moved to Iowa in 1858, married Patience Sitler in 1870s, and lived in Daytonville before moving to Wellman. Surviving are his widow, Danville, three sons LaMont Moomey Denver Cole, two daughters Jessie Winne Austie Mooney, and a brother Austin W Brown. two daughters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Journal's Three Quarter Century club.
The Journal prints a special centennial edition aimed for distribution before the county’s summer celebration. Four pages per impression and at least 200000 impressions are planned as color parts are produced and pressmen rotate duties in the Journal building.
The British liner Queen Mary arrived in New York from Southampton after a 4 day 12 hour 16 minute crossing, reaching Ambrose light at 9 03 am. She tied up at the new Hudson pier after delaying eleven hours for heavy fog and may challenge the Normandie for speed honors.

Mrs Hannah Essley 81 died Saturday night at the home of her daughter Mrs C M Kauffman in Wayland. A heart attack caused death. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 PM conducted by Rev J J Pritchard of the Wayland Methodist church, with six grandsons as pallbearers. Burial at Sehrock cemetery south of Washington. She was born October 29 1854 in Washington and married N C Essley July 3 1872. Surviving are three daughters, one son, a sister, sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, with four sons and one daughter having preceded her.

Representative Marion Zioncheck of Washington state was arrested today and taken to Gallinger Hospital for observation. Officials say he drove recklessly in the District of Columbia and annoyed federal staff, after a White House visit with gifts for President Roosevelt and a bid to arrest Vice President Garner. He sped to the executive offices in a yellow car with empty beer bottles, claiming one was filled with gas for Garner.
Mrs. Claud Rhodebeck suffers a fractured pelvis while Mrs. John Cherry has a broken collar bone after a collision three miles west of Mt Pleasant yesterday around five. John Cherry and Mr. Rhodebeck escape with minor injuries. W. M. Faherty of Des Moines faced a high speed impact after waiting to cross primary No. 34. Three Des Moines passengers are hospitalized with fractures.
More than 200 people attended a memorial service at the Presbyterian church with representation from Daughters of Union Veterans Daughters of the American Revolution and Women's Relief Corps. Veterans from the Spanish American War World War I and Civil War were noted along with a sermon by Dr F W Eastwood on Memorial Day significance. The service featured choir performances and solos by Mrs EB Morrison Jr and Helen Coffey.
