More than 5,000 people left homeless as floodwater isolates Red River parish. Drownings reported and many missing while relief, including Red Cross aid, distributes food. Crests threaten nearby towns as 250000 acres remain inundated.
Reports from the county hospital say Col Frank Macon shows no adverse symptoms and is not dangerously injured after his car, struck by a machine driven by M. S. Fish of Stuttgart Ark, threw him from the vehicle near South Iowa avenue and Madison street. He spent a comfortable night and is in good spirits. Lions Escape Calamity Leaves Five Hurt in Circus Incident.
Delegates at the seventy second United Presbyterian church assembly in Des Moines discuss merging with the Northern Southern Dutch and German Reformed and United States Presbyterian churches. The merger was approved in committee, held over for final action, with most delegates in favor after floor speeches. A telegram expressing support for Hoover and the Attorney General’s prohibition efforts was adopted.
Chicago May 29 Sears Roebuck & Company will run seven of its nine mail order plants on a five day week from July 1 to September 1 as an experiment. The company will close the 320 retail stores one half day weekly. Salaries for 19 000 employees stay the same. Exceptions may exist for Los Angeles and Seattle mail order plants. The 13 month calendar allows the summer five day week by finishing midseason inventory earlier.
Winnie Palmer county superintendent announces a high school ceremony at two o clock Saturday where 133 boys and girls will receive eighth grade diplomas. Supt Jil Peet of the Washington schools will give an address. A corrections note fixes a prior listing error in the Washington township graduates Arden Hughes and Grace Morrison.
A Stinson mono plane named K departed Brainard Field Hartford at 10 44 am for Buenos Aires. Capt Herbert C Paud ge Lt Commander George R Pond and Lt Garland P Reed aboard. A refueling contact over West Haven succeeded with planes four miles apart. They headed toward Bridgeport airport as the next refueling point.
About thirty Bethle hem commandery Knights Templar members gathered yesterday afternoon to Elm Grove cemetery to decorate the graves of deceased members. Rev. J. H. Krenmyre of Ainsworth gave an Ascension Day address. Earlier graves at Woodlawn and other cemeteries were also decorated.
Hoover attends Memorial Day ceremonies at Gettysburg battlefield as France Britain and Ireland mark the day with graves decorated for American and Allied soldiers. Pershing, veterans, and war widows attend in Europe while Ambassador Edge calls for lasting peace. Mr and Mrs Ritchey and son visit Lake City for Memorial Day.
In Uhrichville Indiana a boy named Istac sins, who joined in 1861 as a drummer then carried a shortened musket after comrades cut 12 inches from the barrel, marches in the Memorial day parade as the G A R baby. He was discharged at 16 and is described as still chipper.
Supt. J. H. Peet of Washington schools announces four new teachers to join next year’s staff. Vacancies are few, with three positions still to fill including home economics at Junior High, English at Junior High, and the public school nurse. New hires are Elinor Douglas Milford Iowa mathematics and commercial at the high school. Lucy Stahl Manley Iowa junior college and high school chemistry with a year at Oelwein high. Mabel Rice Washington sec ondary at Heights school with three years rural experience. Wildemae Hutton St. Joseph Missouri bachelor of science at Drake and one year Des Moines teaching, assigned to Heights and Wallace kindergarten.
On May 29 in Columbus Junction the Louisa county fire and drum corps will perform at Columbus high school before memorial services at 2 PM with Muscatine Mayor Herbert Thompson delivering the address and a chorus choir singing. Afterward a procession to the United Presbyterian church will proceed to the cemetery led by J M Marshall and include veterans groups and school children. graves decorated by the W R C and students. Funeral services for Mrs William Samuelson of Gary Indiana, formerly Edna Hartman, were held Wednesday at 2:20 PM at J C Richie’s home with Rev W A Lamp presiding. burial followed in Columbus City cemetery. Joe Church plans to move into the TJ Klotz estate property next week.
United Press reports across the state observed a veterans day with cemeteries flowers and flags. Parades honors and patriotic speeches were held for Civil Spanish American and World War dead. Notables included Rev Ernest Shatter and Judge H H Carter with ceremonies at multiple towns including Fort Madison Vinton Shenandoah Cedar Rapids Britt Grinnell Batavia and Mason City where wreaths from President Hoover and War Secretary James W Good were laid.
Attorney General Mitchell filed a brief with the Supreme Court defending the constitutionality of the Jones five and ten law. The brief argues the act does not create a new offense but broadens penalties for national prohibition violations. It contends that federal courts should apply penalties per the evidence of violation rather than requiring habitual sales.
Washingtons Memorial day parade draws hundreds of school children National Guard troopers and veterans in cars with citizens providing floats. Children march two abreast for two blocks carrying logs and flowers for grave decoration at Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries. Troop F 113th Cavalry, the Legion drum corps and Washington Band provide music and color. The parade splits to Woodlawn and Elm Grove where brief programs honor fallen soldiers with speakers Hugh McCleery and Al Baldrige. Boy Scouts remind spectators to bareheaded as the flag passes.
Mrs Will Black died this morning at about eight at her sister Mrs Will Crozier's home in town after a long illness. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and widow of a former Washington County sheriff. Funeral services set for Sunday at two at the Presbyterian church.
Ott Smithers told Sheriff Fred Sweet that a large sack of wool was stolen from his place while he was away. The theft was not discovered for several days. Mrs Elizabeth Sehuly will entertain members of the U and I club and their father, and at Alpha the Rev C J Felter spoke.
Rev A W Henke delivered a Memorial day talk in Central Park praising America’s faith as the force behind national endurance and sacrifices in war. He quoted Lincoln, Mecrae, and a prayerbook, noting patriotic gatherings, parades, and graves decorated as citizens honor the fallen.
