Tax Cut May Reach Long Term Investors On Paper Profits
UPI reports congressional tax writers back a large reduction in capital gains taxes for long term investors. The House Ways and Means Committee voted to slash taxes on profits from stocks, bonds, homes, and real estate, effective next Jan 1. The plan proposes 40 percent relief for most taxpayers and 22 percent for high brackets, with further cuts from income tax rate reductions. Only profits on assets held at least three years would qualify. Kennedy proposed raising the holding period to one year, while a compromise would keep current treatment for six months to just under three years. The plan aims to apply to three years or more holdings, shifting the tax burden toward more favorable rates. The current system taxes long term gains at half the profit or 25 percent of full profit, layered on top of regular income taxes.
