Ford Motor Company proposed an 11-cent hourly pay rise for 126,000 CIO UAW workers but the union rejected the deal, citing linked wage issues with retirement and Social Security benefits. Leaders Leonard and Thompson urged focus on workers’ human needs beyond wages.
Des Moines May 28. Municipal Judge Don Allen ruled that bingo even when sold as a ring to play is gambling. Robert Reichardt, Riverview Park manager, faced a gambling house charge after a pre raid on the bingo concession. Reichardt pays a $50 fine. defense says ring purchase created a free game but judge calls it subterfuge. Police will continue to monitor bingo play in the city.
Washington Recreational Council met to discuss planned supervised programs. Dances for high school students and younger married people are being organized, location for a softball field is not yet chosen, two tennis courts are aimed for, and playground details will be announced by Norman White soon.
Decoration Day Friday May 30 will be a regular holiday in Washington with widespread business closures. The survey led by Secretary John Lee of the Chamber of Commerce shows most stores, poultry houses, barber shops, lumber yards and feed stores closing. Drug stores close at 10 pm. public library and Y M C A close. post office has no rural mail. courthouse offices closed. theaters stay open with special shows at State and Fox venues.
The Senate defeated two McClellan amendments and a McCarran proposal on May 28. An amendment to raise personal exemptions from 500 to 750 and add a 1500 head of family exemption failed 44 to 27. A plan to tax residents of noncommunity property states on a family partnership basis lost 54 to 24. A further bid to grant a 125000 maximum extra exemption for reinvested business income failed 69 to 16.

The Washington Ministerial association coordinates a five church vacation school from June 2 to June 13 with primary to intermediate groups meeting in Methodist United Presbyterian and Evangelical and Reformed churches. Frank Shebeck died at his home ten miles northeast of Washington after a stroke two years ago. He was 74. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at L. A. Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Fred E. Miller in charge. Burial will be in Riverside. He was born May 24, 1873, in Jackson township, son of John and Kathryn Shebeck, and spent most of his life in Washington county. He married Emma Prebyl on Oct. 4, 1898. Survivors include son Melvin of Tulsa, Oklahoma daughter Mrs. Frank Krotz of Washington and sister Mrs. Julia Bidlock of Oakland, California, plus seven grandchildren.
Donald Smith, 47, a long time high school instructor in Albia, died when a creek bank caved in and his tractor rolled over on his farm near town yesterday.
Early morning rainfall reached a half inch with more since and a measurement at seven oclock. Rainfall this week totals over an inch as precipitation has occurred nearly daily. The low temperature last night was 42 degrees.

A foot of wet snow fell in Alliance Nebraska stalling traffic and chilling the Midwest. Des Moines reported its coldest May 28 since 1894 with temperatures around 39 and Sioux Falls at 24. Snow spread across northern Nebraska Iowa South Dakota Wyoming and Colorado as farmers worry over possible crop damage.
Richard Stephens, an Iowa farmer, told the Senate Agriculture Committee that farmers want a nationwide soil fertility program. He said Iowa farms filled only 18 percent of phosphate needs and 37 percent of fertilizer needs last year, stressing the necessity of affordable nutrient supplies to maintain soil resources in the Midwest.
