Iowa City notes that Prof. Norman Meier of the University of Iowa will teach the psychology of music at the University of California at Berkeley this summer, extending cross campus study opportunities.
Myron Engelson a 51 year old farmer from southwest Hubbard died when his team bolted a manure spreader ran over him. The accident occurred as the team bolted and he fell under the spreader wheels.
Rural population decline shown in preliminary figures by district supervisor Roger F Warin. Adams County lists 1,600 farms, 30 fewer than 1930, while total population fell from 10,437 to 10,150.
Ottumwa officials call the measure the most important ordinance in a decade creating the post of traffic officer with Henry Cook, city engineer, assuming the title.
State grand officers of the Order of Eastern Star opened their midyear meeting in Masonite hall, Cedar Rapids. Mrs Mozelle Russell of Winfield as grand worthy matron presided. A reception and dance followed a dinner. sessions will continue today.
In Waterloo nine ballots were needed before Black Hawk county supervisors named Dr. Richard V. Tysdale of Cedar Falls as physician for the county home. Democrats pressed for Dr. George C. Murphy of Waterton, and later considered Dr. A R Buckmaster of Dunkerton as alternatives.
Fire, casualty and surety insurance agents from 20 central Iowa counties were invited to an education forum sponsored by the Iowa Association of Insurance Agents at Hotel Fort Des Moines. It is the fourth in a series with prior meetings in Council Bluffs Burlington Waterloo and a future session planned for Sioux City Mason City on June 3.

Principal George Fields announced that due to cool wet weather the high school and junior college commencement exercises tomorrow evening will be held in the Methodist church. The program starts at 8 15 with Dr Marty G Barnes registrar at the University of Iowa delivering the keynote titled A Personal Inventory.
A fifteenth district Christian Endeavor convention will be held at the Sigourney Presbyterian Church next Sunday June 2 with sessions in the afternoon and evening. Registration at 2 p.m. program at 2 30 p.m. Potluck supper at 5 30 and Christian Endeavor meeting at 6 30. Evening service at 7 o'clock with Rev Walter Eastwood of Milton Pa as speaker. Howard Daven state field secretary will attend. theme is Christ Calls. Awards for mileage enrollment and largest attendance will be given.
Stephen B. Jones named relief director for Washington County replacing Martha Foster who resigned effective June 1. He will maintain Foster's policies and keep Irene Wood statistician and Laura Kehoe stenographer in place. Jones, a Polk County social worker who trained at the University of Iowa in 1935, says he is pleased with the county and community and plans no staff changes. He is unmarried.
Rev. George C. Pennington of West Chester was elected president of the Washington County Ministerial Association at a meeting held yesterday after a picnic dinner in Sunset Park. Rev. T. Ferdinand was named vice president and Leigh W. Soule was re-elected secretary treasurer. The principal after dinner speaker was D. Kirkpatrick of Keota, head of Walder Farms, speaking on The business of Making Friends.
The high school band last evening could not perform due to weather, delaying the final concert of the series. Director Maurice Brayton said the last week of school remains uncertain for rescheduling and a definite date will be announced if it can be arranged.
The report erred in naming Father O’Donnell as the celebrant of the mass at 8 at St James Church Sunday. The correct celebrant was listed in the parish bulletin as another priest.
A joint statement from congressional leaders and Treasury Secretary Morgenthau says President Roosevelt approved a national defense tax program expected to raise up to 700 million dollars yearly. Daughton and Harrison will convene committees soon to draft details.
The Journal publishes corrections to a Memorial Day soldier list. A. N. Euwer of the 155th Pennsylvania is omitted and buried at Kim Grove Cemetery. Additional updates fix names and units across several Iowa and Illinois regiments, including Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries and entries for Barnes, Burkholder, Bennett, Burham, Kelsey, Reiner, Bovee, Donaldson, Shaw, Curran, Gilson.
The State Theater will screen The Flag Speaks this Thu Fri and Sat as part of the American Legion ism program. Narrated by John Nesbitt in technicolor, the twenty minute history of the flag covers proper etiquette and display and will be shown with Buck Benny Rides Again starring Jack Benny and Rochester.

County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill announces the high ten honor students in Washington County eighth grade graduating class, with diplomas to be awarded Friday evening. Richard Winegarden of Maple Grove tops the list with 96.7, followed by Evelyn Givans Gray school 96, Deane Rinder String town 98, and others from Pleasant Valley, South Prairie, Rolling Green, Bunker Hill, Day tonville, Grand Prairie, and Smith Creek, all above 90. Additional graduates above 90 include Roger Romine Maple Grove and Mary Kordwell Red.
George Paradise of Sioux City state commander of the American Legion will speak at a Chamber of Commerce and American Legion post meeting tomorrow evening in the YWCA. Dinner is 615 and the talk follows the dinner program. The meeting aims to finish before Case field commencement exercises tomorrow night.
Jack Hale will return to his Pontiac Michigan home Sunday following his semester at the junior college here during the past term.

Berlin reports German forces surged around Bri tain and French positions after the Belgian army capitulation. Allies allegedly become grievously trapped as British and French lines strain under rapid German advances. Churchill warns Commons of hard tidings and tenacity in fighting France.
Washington reports that King Leopold surrendered the Belgian army to the Germans. Secretary Stephen T. Barry quoted President Roosevelt calling the news and days sad, noting the sorrow of the moment without judging the action.
